From Louisville Uncovered…

Cyndy Tandy found 10 acres in Pleasure Ridge Park where the mint for all those Mint Juleps come from. During Derby time, more than 6,000 plants are harvested every week, 10 times the normal demand.

Dohn and Dohn Gardens is the exclusive supplier of mint at Churchill Downs, as well as many local restaurants.  Bill Doan has been in charge since 1974, hiring local young people to pick and clean and package the mint.

Doan’s plot is located in PRP, in the middle of a residential neighborhood. The demand at Derby is strong, but mint is used in Louisville all year long in other drinks, including Mojitos.
