Kudos to U of L Athletic Summer Camps

Both my kids are in U of L Athletic Summer Camps this week.  I am amazed at the professional way these camps are run. The coaches and athletes have a huge amount of responsibility with the campers while they are in their care but honestly the students athletes seem to have as much fun as the campers. The student athletes are increasing their fan base and teaching skills at the same time. Ken Lolla’s Louisville Soccer Academy camp bleeds red of course. Riding the wave of the fabulous Division 1 Soccer season, the first camp session was completely sold out….

A Good Friday in Louisville

Yay! Friday. Yay! It’s not raining. How about some good news. No More Stamps: Should taxpayers foot the bill when Metro Council members want to provide Cokes at public meetings? Should we pay for tickets so members can attend high-priced events? Gift cards to constituents for winning decorating contests? Jim King wants a ruling from the County Attorney on what’s OK and not OK for members to spend their discretionary funds on. I suspect the free gift card party is over. Miraculous Science: U of L researchers are making headlines in the world of science, coming up with a new…

Feeling Floody in River City

I don’t like this forecast, or the fact that Bud Schardein says he’s getting ready for flood conditions worse than he’s ever seen. Meanwhile, the show(s) must go on. I’ll be at the Yum! Center tonight for the Derby Festival Basketball Classic, checking out some of U of L’s new recruits. It won’t be affected by rain, at least. But based on yesterday’s media event and the flooding, it looks like next week’s steamboat race is in trouble. That event has really lost its luster recently, as there have been steamboat issues and a lack of interest by the media. And…

Cardinal Towne Campus Will Open on Schedule Despite Fire

A fire this afternoon at the Cardinal Towne Leasing Office, which resides near the development, will not affect the opening date of Cardinal Towne, scheduled for August 15, 2011.  The leasing office at 1806 South Third Street, located almost one block north of Cardinal Towne, sustained damage today. There were no injuries.  This event will not affect ongoing Cardinal Towne campus construction. “This was due to a contractor error while performing welding duties on the Cardinal Towne leasing office itself, and is no reflection on our quality control, or construction procedures.  The contractor is taking full responsibility for the damage…

Stoodentz makez a diferenz

Were you ever a young whippersnapper alive with idealism and energy? The good news is that student and youth activism are alive and well at the University of Louisville and Indiana University Southeast through Student United Way. Student United Way are student-run organizations that inspire college students to give, advocate and volunteer.  They challenge students and ask questions like: Do you feel strongly about providing educational opportunities to children in low-income areas? Do you want to make students aware of the benefits of certain health practices? Student United Way provides students an opportunity to be leaders on their campuses and leaders in…

No Name-Calling Week Pushes For More Than Civility

This week at UofL is “No Name-Calling Week.” It may sound trite, the phrase “name-calling” bringing to mind a childish squabble. But as recent events have reminded us, name-calling can, and does have a negative and perhaps deadly impact on the targets. As children, we’re admonished to ignore those who called us names, that it reflects more on the name-caller than it does the one the jeers are directed toward, and anyone who says otherwise is labeled too sensitive, among other things. It is interesting that we admonish the one targeted by the name-caller just as much as the name-callers…
