Tailspin Ale Fest

In Jtown, protestors showed up to greet Mitch McConnell.

LouisvilleKY’s THE WEEK: From Tailspin to a Turtle’s Appearance, and on to the Gravy Cup,

Much was focused this week on Mitch McConnell’s appearance at a luncheon sponsored by the Jeffersontown Chamber. Plenty of protesters showed up at the Marriott, but none were able to get anywhere close to the Senator, who took only a few questions from the audience, mostly about healthcare. Of course, Mitch and his colleagues don’t like talking about a topic for which they don’t have an answer. But let’s move on to more pleasant topics, like how I’m never going to lose any weight with this kind of schedule. It all started Saturday at the Tailspin Ale Fest at Bowman…

LouisvilleKY’s THE WEEK: In a Tailspin with EatDrinkTalk and Rusty Satellite

If you didn’t get a ticket at one of the many pre-Tailspin events held around town, you may be out of luck. But if you are going to the Tailspin Ale Fest at Bowman Field Saturday, come by and let me pour you a beer. I’ll be a volunteer beer filler upper at the 4th annual Winter Warmer, along with my EatDrinkTalk partner Steve Coomes. Here’s a story from EDT about it. Speaking of EDT, this week’s podcast is a tasty one, and includes my interview with Chef Ellen Gill McCarty, and Michael Beckmann, talking about Das Meal, a five-course beer-paired…

LouisvilleKY’s THE WEEK: A Sweet Artistic Treat For Your Sweetie

Perhaps the best, and surely the sweetest, treat of the week was last night’s reception at Cellar Door Chocolates. Two of the loveliest Rusty Satellite alumni have teamed up to offer Barnhart Bars, a series of chocolate bars packaged with artistic, romantic images of women. Erika Chavez-Graziano, the entrepreneur behind Cellar Door, and Jeaneen Barnhart, the local artist known for beautiful images of horses and women, debuted the Barnhart Bars at Cellar Door’s 4th Street location Thursday to an approving, capacity crowd. Chavez-Graziano described the care that has gone into creating the new product. The bars sell for $12. “We…

LouisvilleKY Loves Its Tailspin Ale Fest

On Being a Volunteer Pourer at LouisvilleKY’s Tailspin For Pete’s Sake. . . that was the chocolate-peanut butter beer I was pouring, along with Sweet Baby Jesus, which, was just about as good. I was told the difference was a single percent of alcohol, but no one I spoke to mentioned any difference. I’m no beer connoisseur, and prior to the Tailspin Ale Fest at LouisvilleKY’s Bowman Field on Saturday, I wasn’t “in” on the craft beer scene. I spent several hours as a volunteer beer pourer on an unbelievably clear and warm February day. Pouring beer is a fun job,…

LouisvilleKY’s THE WEEK: In Which Mary Lou’s Viagra Bill Catches Fire

Yes, thank you very much for the 60 degree weather this weekend. Should be great for the Tailspin Ale Fest, where I’ll be pouring beers and enjoying the sold-out event. It starts at 3 Saturday at Bowman Field, so come on out after the weekend’s other big event — the Cards’ game with Duke, featuring a celebration of the 1986 NCAA champs, the team with Milt Wagner, Billy Thompson and Robbie Valentine. Robbie is now an executive at the KFC Yum! Center and will be our speaker at the next Breakfast of Champions, March 8 at the University Club. Sign…

LouisvilleKY’s THE WEEK: Rusty’s Take, Podcast Excellence and Shiny New Things

It sure has been a good week for me — I started swimming at LA Fitness, the first exercise I’ve had in months, U of L got its biggest win of the year against UNC the night before UK suffered its most embarrassing loss, and I got treated to a free beer at World of Beer and lunch from Thorntons. The Rusty podcast includes a new friend and an old one. And we finalized plans for a couple of great future events. Details of these and other happenings: Tailspin Tales: On Rusty, I introduced you to Trevor Cravens, president of…

Casks for a Cause is the Weekend’s Best Reason to Drink Beer

POSTPONED TO JUNE 27   This weekend’s big event is Casks for a Cause, in which some so-called “media stars” were asked to support charity by creating their own beer brand. I can’t figure out why no one requested a Rusty Satellite brew. Nonetheless, I’m planning to go and sample a few at the new Goodwood Brewery at Clay and Main. Plus, a chance to hear the Cathouse Liars. Here are the details: No Experience Necessary. Casks for a Cause brings together Media Stars supporting their favorite charity for a wham-bam Beer Block Party that is sure to please the crowds as…
