Richie Farmer; A Life Lived on Scholarship

First of all, allow me to apologize for my extended absence from these pages. I’ve been in the beginning stages of a new job, and it’s taken until now for me to get time to write. NOW–let’s get to the fun part! Two words. Richie Farmer. Can you believe this guy? Never in my professional lifetime have I seen an office-holder destroy a lifetime of goodwill and political capital in such a concentrated period of time. Granted George Bush The Elder managed to come close after his popularity plummeted following the first Gulf War, but Farmer’s implosion has been so…

Halfway To Nowhere In Frankfort

Today marks the official halfway point of the 2012 Kentucky General Assembly. So far there’s no gambling amendment, no final redistricting plan, and no budget. I’m willing to concede the budget always comes last in the session so lawmakers are off the hook for now on that issue. As for everything else–not so much. A possible vote on expanded gaming by the public is now dead and buried. Possibly for good. The Senate strongly shot it down 21-16, so it accomplished two things. Killing the bill, and killing once and for all, the idea that Senate President David Williams would…

Beshear’s Budget Could Be a lot worse

Governor Steve Beshear outlined his latest biennial budget Tuesday night and as expected, there are some major cuts. But they are not across the board. That is something new for Beshear since he’s been in budget-cutting mode for virtually his entire administration. Ten times in the past four-plus years Beshear had to balance a budget with across the board cuts and attrition. But not this time. The governor revealed a figure of eight-point-four percent which will be cut this time around. At first blush that seems almost draconian next to cuts of three percent for the rest of his time…

Beshear to U of L: NO, Ask Me Again and I’ll Tell you the Same

U of L Hospital Still in Trouble: Another effort to get U of L Hospital some love from the Governor has failed.  Beshear announced today there will be no revised plan to get U of L a piece of the merger pie. That deal was consummated last week between Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s Healthcare and Catholic Health Initiatives, a deal that will basically save Jewish. U of L simply botched the merger from the start by keeping details secret from the public and not playing nice enough with politicians, including Beshear, and failing to emphasize the positive ($$) aspects…

Beshear Leaves A Lot Out-For Now

He focused on gambling and how deep spending cuts will effect the commonwealth, but Governor Steve Beshear made more news by omission than anything else. During his fifth State Of The Commonwealth speech, Beshear informed the General Assembly that there will be very deep cuts in spending during the coming budget cycle. He also renewed his call for expanded gaming several times. The gaming is old hat for Beshear, but he used the potential budget cuts to soften the ground for a possible vote on gaming this time instead of plugging in non-existing gambling dollars to a phantom budget. Remember,…

Being Uncool for the News Cause

It’s not like I ever thought I was that cool, but then, it’s another thing when your own son puts it out there in public. In a response to the heavily-trafficked post on UK basketball the other day by Gabe Duverge, Josh wrote this: “i can verify that rick redding does not know anything about being hip.” The good news about that is the UK piece generated record traffic here at LouisvilleKY.com, and I’m willing to be exposed publicly for non-hipness for the cause of this site. So here are some other people who aren’t that hip, but are making…

Political Stew–Here and There

Iowa Aftermath–As I posted last month, Iowa really means nothing as far as who wins the nomination, but it does serve one purpose. It usually weeds out the haves from the have-nots money-wise. That doesn’t seem to be the case this year. Mitt Romney is well financed, but Rick Santorum ran a shoestring campaign and tied the front-runner. While it’s a great start for Santorum, unless he gets a huge cash infusion from this, it can’t last. My take on Santorum is simple. Timing is everything. After watching everyone in the GOP race take a turn at the top of…

Year Two: Who Came Back and Who Got Married

We’re back for more in our second year here at LouisvilleKY.com. Send me your suggestions (rick@louisvilleky.com) for making the site better, or start a dialogue by leaving a comment. Is This All You Got?: Gov. Beshear released a list of top 10 accomplishments, which was pretty easy to poke fun at, as John David Dyche did in his C-J column today. Example — Beshear took credit for creating 13,718 jobs, but didn’t have anything to do with many of them, and all those announced didn’t necessarily come to fruition. Cozy With King: Looks like Jim King will get an unprecedented…

Jerry’s Promise, Host’s Legacy and a Dumb Pervert

Jerry Abramson vowed to be the most active Lt. Governor of all time yesterday during inaugural festivities.  He probably will. And it won’t take doing much to make us all forget about that Daniel whatsisname. Still not a Priority: About 3/4 through his second inaugural address last night, in that hokey western Kentucky accent, Steve Beshear said this:  “And a foundation which requires allowing the people of Kentucky to vote on expanded gaming within our borders.” That’s not exactly putting the pressure on the Kentucky Senate and David Williams. It’s not putting the hammer down and saying it’s a big…

Hoops, A Ball and Harsh Words for Reagan

That was quite a weekend. especially if you’re a hoops junkie. End of the World – Not: Kentucky’s last-second loss to Indiana was a shocker, especially considering that even though the Cats played poorly overall, they were in a position to win on anything other than a last-second 3-pointer. They’re still a superior team, especially if Calipari can somehow figure out what alien inhabited Terrence Jones’ body in Bloomington. Jones disappeared and needs a wake-up call.  Even Dick Vitale, on the ESPN broadcast, was at a loss about Jones’ performance, saying repeately he couldn’t understand what he was doing after…
