Louisville to Houston in the Madness

Hoops Hysteria is here. For three weekends in March, the entirety of our community will be sneaking in peeks at the scores at the office. Husbands will beg their wives to eat in the TV room. Laptops everywhere will be streaming March Madness On Demand, and a college kid will skip out on beach time in 80-degree weather to catch a couple games. There is nothing like March Madness. Louisville has a tough draw in the first round. The Thursday match-up with Morehead State is no cupcake. The Eagles have a strong defense and Kenneth Faried, the most prolific rebounder…

Louisville Rallies Back to Overtake Notre Dame, 83-77

The Cardiac Cards strike again. Louisville continued its impressive play with a comeback from 16 down to defeat a surging Notre Dame team. The Cardinals went into the half down 14 and having huge problems pushing the tempo. Yet when Rick Pitino and company emerged, UofL was able to get back into the swing of things. The Cardinals came out of the break with a full court press that quickly caused the Fighting Irish some problems. Louisville was able to cause 11 turnovers, many unforced, which transferred into much needed momentum. The Cards also excelled at shutting down Big East…

Cardinals Stunned in Morgantown, 70-72

How do you know when Rick Pitino is livid? When he takes his jacket off, and he certainly had reason to be.  While the game was poorly officiated, Louisville’s loss to West Virginia wasn’t without fault from the Cards. The out of bounds call was very questionable, and Preston Knowles’ foul with .6 seconds left was excessive. Yet, when the Cardinals had a chance to decide the games themselves. Peyton Siva has to step up and make both foul shots in  end-game situations. Also, Knowles pulled up for the game winning shot so early. Louisville has had so much success…

Cards Light Up Providence on Senior Night, 86-60

Preston Knowles and Kyle Kuric put on a clinic for Louisville fans during the final game of the KFC Yum! Center’s maiden voyage.  The Ville’s dynamic duo combined for 45 points, 15 from three-pointers, and a stellar 54% field goal percentage. After a slow start, the Cards took over, and with the win secured a double-bye in the Big East Tournament next weekend. Louisville used the final home game to recognize the two seniors Knowles and George Goode. Coach Rick Pitino started both and used his whole bench to dismantle the Friars. At times the Cards tried to do too…

Cards’ Win at Rutgers Is a Low Scoring Affair

Louisville came out of the tunnel looking sharper than ever with a 17-2 opening run at Rutgers. Yet after the 12-minute mark in the first half,  the Cardinals lost their luster. Preston Knowles was on fire in the first half, shooting three for four behind the arc. He also led the team 14 points, eight rebounds, and five steals. U of L won in Piscataway, 55-37, to go to 10-5 in the Big East and 21-7 overall. In the second half the Cards came out with no intensity. Rutgers had a chance to make it a game after Louisville missed…

Slow Start Dooms Cardinals in Cincinatti

After the Cardinals pulled off their stylish win over Syracuse on Saturday, fans in the ‘Ville had been buzzing about the incredible team effort of late. What U of L hadn’t encountered yet was a team playing for its life. The teams entered the game with identical 19-6 records, but U of L was ranked 16th and Cincy was in a more desperate position. The final was 63-54 as Cincy dominated much of the game before a sparse house of 11,511 at Fifth Third Arena. Cincinnati came into the game battling for post-season positioning.  It needed a win to bring…

Pitino Likes Cards’ Spirit and Attitude

Rick Pitino is talking about why this year’s Cards are so good. “They are so willing to play for the name on the front of the jersey and not the one on the back,” he said after the win against Syracuse. Pitino compared this bunch affectionately with his 1987 Providence Final Four team. Remember that this was widely expected to be a rebuilding year. In the preseason, Pitino called it a bridge year. The Cards were predicted to be in the lower half of the Big East standings, but with six regular-season games left, U of L sits in fourth…

Cardinals Notch Seventh Straight Win Against Syracuse

Rocking the 80s throwback uniforms, Kyle Kuric and Preston Knowles continued Louisville’s domination of Orangemen in stylish fashion.  Kuric led the Cards with 23 points and Knowles followed with 22. The Cards benefited greatly from the return of Rakeem Buckles who hadn’t played since Dec 27.  Louisville was at one point ahead of Syracuse by 20 points early in the second half, but Syracuse clawed its way back to close within 3 with 1:39 left. Clutch free throws from Peyton Siva and Chris Smith gave Rick Pitino the much-needed win. The Cards shot prolifically behind the arc once again, scoring…

UofL and UK send Five to NFL Combine

Who says football season is over? The NFL has invited running back Bilal Powell, cornerback Johnny Patrick, and tight end Cameron Graham to the NFL Draft Combine in Indianapolis.  The league has also invited wideout Randall Cobb and running back Derrick Locke of UK.  The Combine serves as the best chance for coaches to see the future pros workout. It includes physical events like weightlifting, dashes, and other tests to measure the physical characteristics of the prospect. Cards Have a Close Call A win is a win is a win is a win. With that being said, a slim four-point…

Cards Go No-Knowles Against DePaul

On his radio show Wednesday, Rick Pitino said senior shooting guard Preston Knowles has a strained hamstring and won’t play against DePaul Saturday. Whether Knowles’ injury will be healed by next Wednesday, when the Cards face a challenging road encounter at Notre Dame, is unknown. And while it’s likely the Cards can rip the Demons without Knowles and his 14.9 scoring average, his availability for the game in South Bend is crucial. The injuries continue to rack up for the Cards, but don’t expect Knowles to sit for long. My sources close to the training staff tell me that he…
