The WEEK says Happy Thanksgiving Louisville KY!

Happy Turkey Day Louisvillians! Here’s some news, and a podcast, and Paul Thorn’s ode to family as we remember that, you know, we’ve got it pretty good around here. There’s plenty of tidbits for you from Rusty Satellite alumni and local media folks: Owen Rides Off: Metro Councilman Tom Owen told me it wouldn’t take him long to decide, and one week after his Rusty Satellite Show appearance the 76-year-old Louisville legend said he’s not up for another election, prompting a lot of Highlands residents to think about running. Happy Trails to Tom. Janelle Chooses Family: WAVE-TV’s anchor Janelle MacDonald…

THE WEEK: Political Rebels, Arts Heroes and Finishing a Bowl

Yippee! I’m celebrating a birthday, so it’s already a good week. Plus, it’s the last weekend before the start of FOOTBALL SEASON, and all your teams are undefeated, and your fantasy football geeks are all tied for first. Here in Louisville, the news is picking up, like. . . Hartman Arrested: Ex-Rusty Satellite guest Chris Hartman, director of the local Fairness campaign, got himself arrested for disrupting a breakfast sponsored by the Kentucky Farm Bureau at the State Fair. Hartman and two others held banners and made a lot of guests at the Ham Breakfast uncomfortable by going inside (they…

Jay-Z, Drake, and Matt Jones: The Rebirth of Big Blue Nation

Behind the 69-62 final score, something bigger happened Saturday afternoon in Lexington. It wasn’t Michael Kidd-Gilchrist or Russ Smith’s stat line. It wasn’t the horrid officiating. Jay-Z, arguably the most popular rapper in the world, sat courtside at Rupp Arena. If you aren’t familiar with Sean “Jay-Z” Carter, you may know his pregnant wife Beyonce. Or perhaps, his current collaborator, the ever controversial Kanye West. A friend helped it sink in at a New Year’s Eve party. “Why would Jay-Z spend his New Year’s Eve in Lexington, Kentucky?” The answer is simple, but the ramifications are boundless. Thanks to John Calipari and his mega-teams of…

Big Local Issues: Penis Trial, Bigamy, Garage Sale

Penis Envy: Anybody else find it funny to see reporters and anchors’ discomfort in covering this “penis” story? Would anyone care about this trial in Shelbyville if the doctor had amputated Phillip Seaton’s hand? And I heard Mr. Seaton uttered this unforgettable string of words, taken completely out of context: “He said the good news was he cut off my penis.”  Really, the story has been getting way more attention than it deserves, but why not? It is about a penis. Me and Mr. Jones: OK, I should have called Matt Jones yesterday about his dispute with Bill Lamb. I…

Was Jones’ Rant Wrong on Lamb?

University of Kentucky sports fans love Matt Jones. The provocative voice behind Kentucky Sports Radio can be counted on to say just the right thing to tick off Cardinal fans, and has built quite a following of Big Blue lunatics who hang on his every word.  His show airs on WKJK 1080 AM weekdays here. Jones also has a  nightly TV show on Insight. And he’s made at least one enemy in the media. On Sunday Jones tweeted that he was going to go off an a rant about a Louisville media personality. That turned out to be WDRB general…
