Why Wouldn’t Obama Come to Manual?

This may be the coolest high school project in history. Students at DuPont Manual High School have created “The President Project” with a specific and attainable goal — to have President Obama come and speak at the school’s 2012 commencement. So the school’s students created The President Project, complete with a web site, video, interview with Mayor Fischer, Facebook and Twitter accounts. The new video was just finished, and there’s an entire campaign designed to get to the President the message that Manual is a place he should come and check out. My two sons who graduated from Manual (classes…

Manual Flunks First Amendment Test

Manual High School principal Larry Wooldridge needs a few lessons in public relations, and then he needs to take a class in his school’s communications magnet on the First Amendment and the free press. That first lesson would be this — when a reporter asks you about a story involving your school, a proper response is not to question whether the incident is a story. And lesson two would be that any incident involving the words “sex” and “teacher” and “student” is ALWAYS A STORY. So Wooldridge, and we can only guess he’s not a journalism major, decided that he…

UConn Win Good for Louisville?

I was glad to be bowling at Ten Pin Lanes last night rather than watching that brick-fest between Connecticut and Butler. I was pulling for the Bulldogs, though it set up something positive for U of L fans to discuss until October. The Cards’ record against the champion Huskies (2-1) vs. UK’s (0-2). And U of L beat Butler. Then there’s the fact that for all the heat the Big East took as 10 of its 11 NCAA Tournament teams got beat, the only team standing at the end was the 9th best team in the league. Expect those arguments…

Manual Teacher’s Relationship with Student was Ongoing

Last Friday afternoon a 17-year-old male student at Manual High School told his parents he was going to a friend’s house. He lied, but that’s standard procedure for a teenager. What he did was spend part of the night with 38-year-old Carrie Shafer, a biology teacher at his school. A police officer later discovered the couple in Miles Park, and arrested Shafer after finding alcohol and a prophylactic near their vehicle. It sparked a firestorm of media coverage, and is being investigated by the Crimes Against Children Unit of the local police department. She resigned on Sunday.  The events that…

Manual Teacher Story Provides Media Lessons

What in the name of Mary Kay Letourneau is going on around here? There’s no doubt the juiciest story in the news yesterday was that 38-year-old biology teacher Carrie Shafer of Manual High School was caught drinking and probably having sex with a 17-year-old Manual student in a public park.  If I’m a news director, it’s a no-brainer that it’s the lead story on the late news. But I’m not a news director. Still, here’s a clue as to why WLKY-TV leads the late news ratings. WLKY reporter Erin Haynes was live outside the Courthouse (where nothing at all was…
