Said Chip Polston, Vice President of Communications for the Kentucky Lottery Corporation: “Every…

Oaks, Derby is More than a Double

Happy Oaks Day! Have you heard any of your friends complain about being worn out from partying? How many times have you heard that Happy song this week? Not getting any work done? Decide to get up for Dawn at the Downs at 5? It’s nothing unusual around here. My week has consisted of Bed Race, Parade Preview Party, Boat Race, Parade and now the home stretch at Churchill with Oaks and Derby. If there were a Derby Festival Bucket List, I knocked a big one off the list Wednesday by riding on the Belle of Cincinnati during the Boat…

Highlighting a Pre-Pre Derby Week at Churchill, Library, Freedom Hall and a Racquetball Lesson

With a couple of days left still until the frenzy of Derby Week, I warmed up with an active schedule of interesting activities available only in Louisville, Kentucky. First, you can listen to my conversation with Darren Rogers, the big man on campus (at least as far as 2,000 media members are concerned) at the new and improved Churchill Downs. Here’s a link to our show, which also includes Kentucky Derby Festival board member Jill Bell. Listen to the Rusty Satellite Show here. The biggest improvement is the massive new scoreboard you’ve probably heard about on the backside. Of course,…

No Fear, Fire Up The Thunder

OK. I’m a little bit worried. I keep running into people, coming across social media posts, that indicates to me a lot of people are staying home for Thunder Saturday.  The message I’d like the community to send is that we’re not giving up our riverfront, Waterfront Park or downtown to criminals. In the last few days, it’s become known that youth gangs were responsible for the March 22 violence, and that the culture that exists within that culture isn’t extinguished by putting more cops on the street or having meetings in the West End. This memo, written by an…

The Great Halloween Debacle of 2013; Rusty’s in Old Louisville with Mike Berry and Larry Muhammad

The date of Halloween is Oct. 31. On that date, children dress up in costumes, knock on the doors of their neighbors, yell ‘Trick or Treat” and merrily collect bags of candy. Now when I was dressing up as a pirate in the South End, our biggest fear was that some sicko would insert a razor blade in an apple. When my kids were little, I walked around with the little Riddlers and SpongeBobs while my wife stayed home and passed out candy.

Cyndi Lauper Loses It, Launches F-Bomb on Live TV

Happy Oaks Day! Not the best Grand Marshal – WDRB photo Let’s just say the Committee selecting Grand Marshals for the Pegasus Parade laid an ‘F-Bomb’ by picking irrelevant one-hit wonder Cyndi Lauper. I heard a Republic Bank official yesterday on Joe Elliott’s radio show explaining the choice — apparently the theme this year is “fun” and somebody that it would be cool to get the woman who sand “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” But Cyndi Lauper, other than that song, hasn’t exactly set the world on fire with her career. I must say, though, I was a big fan…

Can you hear it?

The explosive hallmark of the Kentucky Derby Festival gave its first distant rumbles today as the Festival Board unveiled the poster and details for 2012’s Thunder Over Louisville. This year’s theme: “A Star-Spangled Blast”. The forecast for Saturday, April 21, 2012 promises red, white and blue skies, chock-full of around 100 whirling, twirling aircraft. The patriotic theme celebrates the Marine Aviation Centennial, making Thunder one of three events in 2012 celebrating the military organization’s 100th anniversary. For this reason, you can expect a lot more planes roaring overhead than in years past. Aviation enthusiasts across the region will be wild with…

Will Things Ever Get Back to Normal in Louisville?

There’s plenty of water in places it shouldn’t be, but hey, it’s time to start partying for Derby! Let’s Play Two: The Bats try to make up last night’s rainout at Slugger Field with a doubleheader tonight against Durham. Don’t take your dog. The “dog in the park” promotion has been pushed back to June 1. Tonight there’s live music and $1 beer until 7. Not Where You’d Expect to Find Calvin Borel: Fashion model? The three-time Derby winner landed on the cover of a local mag with wife Lisa. But he almost didn’t get a mount in this year’s…
