Advanced Wedding Lessons – Survival of the Fittest

***Cheesy Love Alert*** Also, no good jokes. As we head into the final few days before the big day, I feel like I’m learning stuff so fast that I can begin to teach some advanced classes.  There have been so many lessons in the last few days that I’m keeping them for the book we write.  So I’ll share the number one.  I’m pretty sure this will hold on as the most important thing planning a wedding can teach you. Planning a wedding is like Navy SEAL training.  Leaving aside the sleep deprivation for now, I always understood things like…

Bachelor Party Extravaganza!!!

We’re back into full-on wedding mode.  We took a little break from planning…a little too long of a break maybe.  We’re now in the homestretch of the final details.  Brigid loves details, and I prefer to just assume that they will take care of themselves.  Needless to say my reassurance that as long as she and I and the judge show up “everything will be fine” is not too effective.  We’re actually trying really hard to remember that this is supposed to be an adventure. So, in the spirit of adventures, this weekend is my bachelor party!  At first I wasn’t…

Groomzilla!!!

If you haven’t read Brigid’s blog from yesterday stop and do it now…I’ll wait.  She always impresses me, but her ability to so easily showcase the most frustrating part of this whole experience is wonderful.  I mean really, it is 2011. It all started with our first meeting with a caterer.  I set up the meeting, I sent her all the preliminary information, I asked 90% of the questions, and at the end of the meeting she turns and says, “So Brigid, have you picked out your colors yet?”  My immediate thought was, “They’re my colors too, you ____.”  It only got worse from there.  As everyone…

Corporate Babble is Good for Weddings

One of my favorite ideas ever is Corporate (or Buzzword) Bingo.  It’s the game you play while in meetings, or listening to the head honcho talk, where you count the number of times you hear corporate-speak.  Words and phrases like teamwork, synergy, deal-breaker, game-changer, same page, culture, vision, mission, fast-track, blah, blah, blah. Don’t get me wrong, none of those things are bad by themsleves, but we all know that when they are strung together by a talking head, you need something to help you pass the time.  Well, I found a place where at least some of these phrases matter.  Wedding…

I Should Have Been a Florist…Really!

Groom confession number 4 – I loved the meeting with the florist. I don’t consider myself a very “artsy” person.  I can’t draw, my ceramics professor in college called me his “special” student (why I took ceramics is a whole different blog), and in general I just never got the “high” that most creative types get from art.  Of course, it then seems ironic that my bride-to-be plays 1,200 instruments, paints, writes, knits, and takes advantage of just about every other artistic outlet known to man.  Opposites attract? This may all have changed for me.  I really should have thought…

Bring it on Prince William

Embarrassing Groom confession number 3 – last night I watched a show about the Royal Wedding.  Brigid has been threatening to get “really into” the Royal Wedding for a while now, and last night we took the plunge together (rather appropriate maybe?). It was interesting.  I’ve always felt a kinship with the future King.  We’re both named William and we’re about the same age.  It sort of seemed like we grew up together.  While he was at the fancy boarding school where he had to wear a tuxedo everyday, I went through my “alternative” phase wearing argyle socks with shorts. …

The Registry…aka Laser Tag for Grown-ups

Most married men will tell you that one of the best parts of the wedding planning process is the  wedding registry, at least most married men I know.  The number one reason that the wedding registry is supposed to be awesome is because they give you a gun.  I’m sure that most of you have seen or used one of things before – it’s a plastic hand-held laser.  How can it be anything but awesome? In addition to the laser tag device, they let you walk around the entire store and pick anything you want.  The theory is that since…

Confessions of a Groom-to-Be

I figure the best way to get to know you folks is to just start by revealing entirely too much about myself.  I love weddings. I always have.  I remember my oldest sister getting married like it was yesterday. I wore tails, bore the ring, and then ran around like crazy at the reception. So when it comes to my very own wedding, I’ve always known it was going to be awesome. The hardest part of course is finding the right bride-to-be…well, I got extremely lucky there. So now it’s all about the other details — location, food, band, bar,…
