Day 789 of My Car-free experiment

These past two years have galvanized my belief that we don’t have an energy shortage in this country. We have a fatigue surplus! And because fatigue mimics tiredness, most of our people are resistant to walking and cycling. If we already feel tired, we’re not going to be convinced that riding a bike for short trips is a good idea. But just try it for 30 days and you’re very likely to get hooked. You arrive at your destination energized – not drained.

Kentucky State Transportation Lets $41.4 Million Go Wasted!

OUTRAGEOUS! The Kentucky Department of Transportation will give up $41.4 million – even though they could have been using the funds to build better bicycling infrastructure, provide bicyclist education, install bike parking. Now they choose instead to send the money back to Washington. Meanwhile, we live in one of the most dangerous places in the U.S. for walking and cycling. Two Louisville Women Say Bike To Work Day, 2011 Is Better Than Morning Coffee!

Norma and Mary Lou tried the buddy system on May 20, 2011. They decided biking to work would be a great way to improve heart and lung health while saving money on gas. I caught up with them on their return trip Friday afternoon. They shared a feeling of exhilaration and accomplishment and decided commuting by bike is the way to go – at least in good weather. In Defense of Fast Trains

As a citizen of the most prosperous and powerful nation on earth, I can’t even get snail rail service from Louisville to Cincinnati, Indianapolis or Nashville! Yet just about everyone I know gets absolutely giddy whenever the prospect of rail travel gets the least bit of discussion. It’s a fact that Main street America has been yearning for fast rail for decades. That we don’t take it seriously is a national disgrace.

TARC Driver Gets Up Early to Pedal His Way to Downtown Louisville

Hugh is a TARC driver. His work day starts at 5:45. He likes the bike-on-board racks on the front of all the TARC coaches as much as I do. “I use them in the evening because I’m not much of an evening-traffic rider. I ride in the morning for the exercise and to save gas. And when I get off in the evening I usually put my bike on the TARC and TARC back home.”
