You can almost see the tumbleweeds

I like to step outside during big “news” events (like basketball finals, horse races, and elections) just to get a sense of the quiet that over takes my part of town.   I spent the morning and early afternoon at Churchill Downs on Derby Day reporting, then grabbed a cab (hey whats with those Derby Day cab fares!) and got home just before the Run for the Roses.   For those of you still at the track, elbow to sweaty elbow, here’s what Bardstown road looks like 2 minutes before the race goes off.  As I am sure you know, a typical warm Saturday evening…

Derby Goers Pop for Champagne Funnels

How do you sip your bottle of bubbly?  Champagne lovers have a functional option thanks to Moet.  Vendors selling individual bottles of Moet at Churchill Downs, pop the cork for you, shove in the plastic sipping funnel and you are good to go.  The Champagne stays a little colder, a little longer than if you had poured it into a regular ol’ plastic cup.  Plus that funnel is reusable so less waste.  For those who have already enjoyed one too many, the funnel makes it less likely you’ll dribble down your middle.  Seated on the finish line Derby Day, Sharon Kaelin enjoys a bottle “this…

Moore of what makes Derby Great

The office space above Luna Boutique is tiny, but doesn’t limit big ideas streaming from Christine Moore.  This hat designer extraordinaire,  not only shows and sells her New York based designs in the Louisville storefront downstairs, she creates many of her one of a kind art pieces, upstairs.  During the week leading up to Derby, boxes of supplies arrive, pile up, and spill out into every corner. Calls come in from corporations bringing their clients (in need of hats); individuals stop by with requests, and assistants to Derby going celebrities.  Churchill (Downs) rang earlier this week with a special order. Singer Mary J….

KY Derby in Texas this year, show updates, and playing accordion with Suzy Bogguss.

After 18 hours and thirty-three minutes in my Mom’s Camry yesterday, two books, and several podcasts, I am in Texas. You may wonder what a good Kentucky girl is doing away from Kentucky on DERBY WEEKEND. I am wondering the same thing. I turned down gigs with Love Jones, at the Mint Jubilee, and several fancy schmancy parties because we’d already made these Texas plans … but I’m not looking back. I’ll just watch on TV. Thankfully, I remember my TwinSpires.com password, and we’re throwing a Derby Party here in Texas. It’s a throwback to my college days in New…

Kirby and Rocky all week from the Backside

So Tuesday morning we gutted out the rain, wind, and dropping temperatures.  Although we were soaked to the bone, it was a blast. Rocky Knight brought his velveteen “derby hat” as I talked with New York milliner Christine Moore.  It’s Kirby and Rocky from The Backside all week on Oldies 1570am.  Its great to be broadcasting with an old friend.  Not that Rocky Knight is an old guy, rather back in the days of WQMF Rocky and Troy Show I used to pop over to the early morning radio show often.   All week Rocky and I are live from the…
