Krekel Party at Saints is the Place to get a Special CD

They’ve only made 300 copies, so you might want to arrive early at Saints Saturday to get the special CD produced by Tim Krekel’s musical friends. As Rusty Satellite Show listeners heard on the show this week, the songs were recorded shortly before Krekel’s death eight years ago. It was the result of a request Tim made to Steve Eilers, who was interviewed on the podcast. “Tim asked me to get his friends to record his songs, so he could hear them,” Eilers explained. And Krekel did get to hear most of the songs on the CD. It’s taken eight…

Rome on a Budget — Day One. Well, half a day…

I’ve always been a bit of a history nerd (David would claim that is a massive understatement), but Antiquity was never my favorite. Even the ancient tombs and sculptures at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York were just okay. I mean, I thought they were neat and all, but it just didn’t fascinate me the way British history did. To me it’s always been about the place, not the artifact. Seeing a mummy in the Louisville Science Center is not the same as seeing it in Egypt. And seeing Roman ruins in a New York museum doesn’t even…

Sweden: Vikings and My Morning Jacket.

There’s a school of thought that says Americans, by nature, are pushy, competitive, and ADD, because of genetics. The type of people who fled their native countries seeking new lives and adventure would pass down those same explorer/mad-scientist genes to present-day folks. I thought a similar theory might hold true for the Swedes who did not become marauders, and instead remained in their beautiful country. That only seems to be the case for non-concert going people. The natives we met during our day-trip throughout Stockholm were perfectly charming and helpful. They were tall, beautiful, and willing to give directions or…

Stealing, Lying, Riding, Biking and Singing

Happy Friday! Yesterday was my Mom’s 85th birthday, so I went over and saw all the birthday cards she got in the mail yesterday. There’s a lot going on around here this weekend, and of course Sunday’s a really big day. No Sympathy for Judy: I’m so glad the Metro Council hasn’t been taken in by Judy Green’s latest antic. She’s produced a note from her doctor saying that undue stress would be unhealthy for her. No shit.  Here’s an idea for Green — Resign and save yourself, and the government,  the stress. The Council voted 17-0 to reject her…

Getting Run-Ruled Really Bites

I’ve been on the wrong side of my share of run-ruled games as a Little League coach. There’s nothing quite so discouraging in baseball as being on the wrong end of a 10-0 score after 4 innings, with the possible exception doing it in front of a national TV audience while fans in your hometown organize watch parties and local media are watching your every  move. At least, though, much of the TV audience was lost or confused as Maria Sharapova was winning the second set in her match in Cincinnati against Jelena Jankovic, midway through a two-hour, 49-minute match…

More Motherlodge plus an Op-Ed/Whine on Shows Starting on Time

I’m playing on Thursday night at the Monkey Wrench as part of the Motherlodge Festivities. If you ask me what Thursday’s show will be like, I will tell you that I don’t know. I will also tell you that my control issues are flipping out because I don’t know. Actually, I’m not sure if it’s about control because I don’t really care what the vibe or order of the show is. I only want to be forewarned. Is that the same thing? Control versus knowledge? Really, if we’re talking about control issues, let’s talk about my favorite “cause” in the…

A Wedding Announcement (David and Brigid)

Brigid Kaelin is getting marrried! There, the word is officially out.  The groom is David Caldwell, known to Brigid’s fans as FWT (Friend with a Truck).  He’s from Texas and works in Tina Ward-Pugh’s 9th District Metro Council office. And from what I hear is quite a romantic, and writer.  Brigid, of course, is the beloved local musician and piano teacher who’s quirky enough to play an instrument you can get at Home Depot in public. Brigid’s been blogging for a while now on various topics like music and cookware and where to put stuff and whiskey.  But when she…
