Earlier in the Spring, the words “Hey, Sugar” appeared in the windows at the intersection of Main and Shelby streets, next to Bittner’s and adjacent to Quills Coffee Firehouse. Now, the window display reads “Hey, I Knead You,” a playful love note to the neighborhood and passersby suggesting that something sweet and surprising is coming to Main Street. Executive Chef and owner of Butchertown Grocery, Bobby Benjamin, is proud to announce the future home of Butchertown Grocery Bakery at 739 E. Main St.
Chef Bobby says the bakery will be an extension of Butchertown Grocery. “At BG, we’re about the best ingredients and excellent hand-crafted technique. We value quality above everything, and I’m excited to have another venue for us to showcase our love of delicious, authentic food in a neighborhood that means everything to us.”
When it comes to hand-crafted technique, no one in the city is better-suited to lead the Butchertown Grocery Bakery team than former Sullivan instructor and Butchertown Grocery pastry Chef Barbara Turner. The bakery represents the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for Chef Barbara and will allow her team to expand their current operation. “The bakery team has been doing so much out of that tiny room (on the second floor of BG.) I literally cried when I found out that I would have a brand new space dedicated to my craft. I can’t wait for the neighborhood to smell like fresh baked bread.”
Chef Bobby and Chef Barbara have shared that all of the fresh breads they make for Butchertown Grocery—baguettes, buns, focaccia, bialy, and more—will be available at the Bakery, in addition to a selection of pastries, sweets, and snacks. The bakery will have a full-service coffee shop, and for a truly unique twist, will also serve beer. Bakery patrons will be able to purchase exclusive bourbon bottles from Butchertown Grocery Barrel Selects, only available by the bottle at the bakery, or by the drink at Butchertown Grocery. Additional menu details and opening dates are to be determined.
