Is it possible to have an environmentally-conscious event without breaking the bank?

The most common piece of advice I’ve read in wedding books and magazines is to make a list of priorities, so we know what’s important to each other in a wedding. Being the social creatures that we are, we know we want to be surrounded by family and friends,  have an open bar, and a live band. (How could a local musician use a DJ for her wedding?)  As far as planning goes, however, a major factor for us is being as Green as possible. Sure, we could just buy carbon offsets from a site like this one, but I’d…

Portman, Kunis Vie for Being ‘Black Swan’

Maddening! Starring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey, Vincent Cassel, and Wynona Ryder. Directed by Darron Aronofsky I was hesitant to see this movie. I’ve had several friends say that it’s the greatest thing since Elvis, sliced bread, and the invention of the wheel. Any other detractors are mumbling. In fact Yahoo! Movie reviews gives it a pretty high average rating in their system. Still, I held out on seeing it until last night. My verdict: It’s okay. That’s not to say that it’s a bad movie; far from it. This is the kind of movie made for up-and-coming filmmakers…

Adjusting to a City Without Strippers

U of L’s Wednesday game got top billing on ESPN last night, and the Cards showed future opponents how to beat them — denying the three and playing intense, hand-in-your-face defense.  Check out Gabe’s piece.  Not mentioned during the game broadcast: Karen Sypher, who seems, maybe, to have run out of rope and will be sentenced tomorrow.  Experts say she goes to the pokey for 5 years, minimum. Unhappy in Overalls: Fox41 found some farmers willing to go on camera to complain about Louisville’s new no-nudity ordinance.  300,000 people here for the Farm Machinery Show. Quote from a guy in…

Slow Start Dooms Cardinals in Cincinatti

After the Cardinals pulled off their stylish win over Syracuse on Saturday, fans in the ‘Ville had been buzzing about the incredible team effort of late. What U of L hadn’t encountered yet was a team playing for its life. The teams entered the game with identical 19-6 records, but U of L was ranked 16th and Cincy was in a more desperate position. The final was 63-54 as Cincy dominated much of the game before a sparse house of 11,511 at Fifth Third Arena. Cincinnati came into the game battling for post-season positioning.  It needed a win to bring…

Bye Bye Borders

Louisville’s retail real estate market just took a really big hit — two prominent and huge Borders stores will be closing as a result of the parent company’s bankruptcy filing. The biggest gap may be downtown, where a 23,000 SF Borders anchors Fourth Street Live. Let’s start the speculation now — will the city’s economic development staff offer up some cash to Cordish to put something in there to keep a black hole from developing in the middle of the city’s major tourist attraction? Let’s just wait and see. Given the flack Jerry Abramson and the Metro Council caught for…

The great fence at the Great Lawn

They’re already charging us money to put air in our tires. Airlines smile when they shake us down for putting luggage on planes. Now Kentucky Derby Festival President and CEO Mike Berry and his board is getting in line to make the taxpayers of Kentucky pay to sit on the Great Lawn to watch Thunder Over Louisville.  If that last sentence doesn’t raise an eyebrow, then check your pulse. The first announcement was that Iroquois Park was eliminated from the Mini Marathon course. That was absurd enough, since the park was part of the tradition of the run, and since the south-end neighbors…

New Slogan: Kentucky, the Charlie Sheen of Commonwealths

Thanks, Shelly: On Monday, Sheldon Berman spared us all some drama by telling the school board to save its breath on saving his job, he’s ready to move on. So that’s that.  Note to those who pushed him out – be careful what you wish for. The diversity vs. student achievement problem won’t be solved by a new chief. Kentucky Greedy Festival: Last night Mike Berry pulled out the best he had in his P.R. basket to try to justify charging people to watch a free fireworks show in a public park. And the media ate it up. Berry whined…

Confessions of a Groom-to-Be

I figure the best way to get to know you folks is to just start by revealing entirely too much about myself.  I love weddings. I always have.  I remember my oldest sister getting married like it was yesterday. I wore tails, bore the ring, and then ran around like crazy at the reception. So when it comes to my very own wedding, I’ve always known it was going to be awesome. The hardest part of course is finding the right bride-to-be…well, I got extremely lucky there. So now it’s all about the other details — location, food, band, bar,…
