If you have cruised the grocery store aisle lately for something fast and convenient to eat, you have undoubtedly seen an increase in the number of nutrition/energy bars on the shelves.  The energy bar industry is a multimillion-dollar booming business.  You can find these bars at the grocery store, the pharmacy, the health food store, discount stores, your fitness center and even at the gasoline station.  We are moving in a fast paced world and all want a quick-pick-me-up snack so we can keep our energy levels up. The energy bar, once used exclusively…

CBS Cleaning Up for WLKY in Sweeps

If you’re a general manager or news director at a local TV station, it may seem that all these special investigative stories you’re seeing on local stations aren’t worth the trouble.  That’s because this month’s sweeps are being dominated by CBS powerful programming lineup, and the effect of that on local news has WLKY-TV leading the way in nearly every news hour. Two-thirds of the way through Sweeps, CBS primetime lineup is bringing home an overall rating of 11.95 for WLKY, more than double its nearest competitor, which has helped the local station enjoy a commanding late-night news number. WLKY…

The Registry…aka Laser Tag for Grown-ups

Most married men will tell you that one of the best parts of the wedding planning process is the  wedding registry, at least most married men I know.  The number one reason that the wedding registry is supposed to be awesome is because they give you a gun.  I’m sure that most of you have seen or used one of things before – it’s a plastic hand-held laser.  How can it be anything but awesome? In addition to the laser tag device, they let you walk around the entire store and pick anything you want.  The theory is that since…

Pitino Remains Skeptical on NBA in Louisville

Coach Rick Pitino has come out in the past against a pro basketball team moving to Louisville, and today was more of the same. In his daily press conference, Pitino began a discussion regarding the NBA by asking the press about the latest news on the issue. At first the reporters took it as a joke, but Pitino persisted and received the low down from one writer. Pitino then outlined a couple of obstacles the NBA would face in Louisville, including scheduling conflicts with both the Men’s and Women’s Cardinal basketball teams, Freedom Hall not being an appropriate venue, and most interestingly…

My Shirt Looks Good on You

All the kids who didn’t make the 2011 baseball team up at Ballard have been notified and my son is not one of them. This means I get another year of concession stand duty, recycling removal and sitting the spring and early summer in the stands with the same women I’ve been sitting with since our boys played together, against each other and for each other’s fathers starting when Kennan was five. Next year, I can go to as many games as I want and work as much concession stand duty as I want, but next year, my son will…

Speed is Big on Impressionism

Admittedly, I know very little about fine art. But I was fascinated by the collection of Impressionist works on display at the Speed Museum’s newest exhibition: “Impressionist Landscapes: Monet to Sargent.” The exhibit, which I saw Friday night, includes more than 70 paintings by some of the most legendary painters of the 19th and 20th centuries.  The main attraction, of course, is Claude Monet, and the Speed secured four Monets, including one that it owns, for the show. But I was drawn to others, like Julien Dupre’s “In the Pasture.” It’s a dramatic piece showing a farmhand struggling to control…

Let’s Talk Some NBA

If you tried to watch the NBA All-Star game last night, you’re a better fan than I am. But I’m much more interested in the buzz around town about the NBA potentially bringing a team here to play in Freedom Hall. While doubters abound, there’s plenty of reason to think this NBA thing is for real. And really, help me figure out why so many people around here don’t want the NBA here — why would you not want a major league sports franchise in your city? If we did, this morning’s news would likely be about how a Louisville…

Planning a Big Party with Little Time.

According to TheKnot.com, we have “477 items to do and 112 items overdue.” I keep looking at that checklist, then closing it when I see the timeline. Apparently, I should have had colors picked out and a venue booked long before I got this diamond ring. What’s really frustrating is that TheKnot is not the only thing telling me how far behind I am. We’ve been to a couple of wedding shows recently, and the first question we are asked is, “When is your wedding?” When we answer “July,” they respond with great trepidation, “This July?!” After nodding the affirmative,…
