Turn Lemons into Lemonade

Why does it always take negativity to shine a light on something that is inherently positive? It’s funny how that works. Most public relations people will tell you there’s no bad publicity. I would agree with that if the P.R. people can spin it correctly. Clearly The Fund for The Arts needs a pr person to step up and help them out. The recent public outrage involving unprofessional answering machine messages left by Allen Cowan at The Fund for The Arts, has shed some public light on the power The Fund for The Arts have in this community. I would…

I Should Have Been a Photographer

Photography is an art.  People who have the ability to tell stories with their images are amazing.  It requires talent, practice, and no shortage of expensive tools.  That being said, I think we might rely on our friends with iPhones and buy a message chair.  Or maybe just hire someone to “take my class picture.” The modern trend is to hire a photographer to do a “photo-journalistic” interpretation of your wedding.  They don’t simply take the basic family photos, but they also get the candid dance floor shots, and intimate loving moments.  For this, they charge a pretty penny.  While you…

Catfight on the Council – Green Faces the Music

A funny thing happened when troubled Metro Councilwoman Judy Green appeared on the Simmons Saturday Morning Solutions program on WLOU-AM 1350. It’s a gospel station, and some of its programming, including this show, is underwritten by the Rev. Kevin Cosby’s St. Stephen Church, of which Green is a member. The show offered Green yet another opportunity to defend her actions — hiring relatives for a jobs program, taking a bribe, using an assistant’s name to run up a $25K credit card debt. Her actions are the focus of an Ethics Commission complaint, which will be considered next week. Thus far,…

Marquette’s Voice a Fan of Coneys

As I sit here watching the Marquette vs. West Virginia basketball game I remember a few weeks back when I picked up Marquette’s radio commentator, Jim McIlvaine, all seven feet, one inch of him. The Golden Eagles were in town to play U of L (Jan. 15, Cards won 71-70). The Cards have a rematch with Marquette tonight in the Big East Tourney in New York. I picked him up at the downtown Marriott and he wanted to go to Bardstown Road. McIlvaine played at Marquette in the early ’90s and then seven seasons in the NBA. He didn’t want to…

Biking All the Buzz in D.C.

In case you’re just tuning in, I’m posting this from Washington, D.C. I got here by bike in an all-day rain on Saturday — 130 miles from Louisville to Cincinnati — and by Amtrak. The train ride took 20 hours. A shoot-out on the railroad tracks caused a five hour delay when police turned the tracks into a real live CSI. Special thanks to my RAGBRAI pal Steve Edwards for transporting me and my bike to his Potomac Falls home, where he and Sharon treat me like a king. I’ll be using the Metro Orange Line and commuting to Metro…

Beshear’s Hand Forced-Calls Special Session

Well, despite all his detractors, (including me), Governor Steve Beshear seems to finally have developed a backbone when it comes to Senate President David Williams. On Wednesday, Williams gaveled the Senate to order, which forced Behsear to call a special session in order to deal with the shortfall in Kentucky’s Medicaid budget.  The reason is that Wednesday made it 30 days for the session, which is the limit for a short  year. The House had opted to wait until next week for the final day in order to negotiate a Medicaid agreement. Williams decided that plan would give the House, and…

Figuring Things Out with Joe Elliott

The big topic during my conversation with Joe Elliott on WGTK-AM today was several of the ways that our government officials have been failing us, and how if we were in charge, we’d save taxpayers a lot of money. The news broke during my visit that Gov. Steve Beshear has, in reaction to State Sen. David Williams ending the state session early, decided to recall legislators for a special session. At a cost of, Joe said, at least $68K a day. This after we taxpayers have spent $1.5 million for them to pass no meaningful legislation the last two months….

No End in Sight for (Judy) Green News

No paper today? For you folks still getting the actual newspaper delivered to your home, that technology apparently failed again today. So you might as well go online for your news. Here’s some: More Heat For Green: One noteworthy story in today’s paper details how Judy Green is getting some more heat, this time from Councilman Jim King, who wants the Ethics Commission to expand its investigation. Green tells the C-J that the allegation of accepting a bribe is no big deal because it’s all been investigated already. She doesn’t realize that people are upset because of the findings in the…
