WAVE’s New Boss Looks a Lot Like the Old Boss

They don’t mess around at Raycom Media. The owner of WAVE-TV often promotes from within, and has tapped Ken Selvaggi from Raycom’s WSFA-TV in Montgomery to replace the retiring Steve Langford, according to WSFA’s web site. Selvaggi announced to his staff on Monday that he will be moving to Louisville after nearly five years. Selvaggi may be familiar to local media types, as he was a producer at WHAS-TV in 1989-90. Langford just announced he was leaving WAVE on Friday. In Montgomery, Selvaggi also did on-air editorials twice a week, so the Hot Button tradition at WAVE is likely to…

Know Your Local News Types

Let’s have a news quiz. See if you can tell why each person is in the news: Judy Green: After LEO’s scathing story last week, Green has been investigated by every local media outlet, and the Courier-Journal turned up even more batshit crazy activities in a follow-up story on Sunday. Karen Sypher:  Facing 87 months in jail, the Pitino-extortionist will do anything to keep her name in the news and avoid going to jail, even making a speech at a local African-American church, saying she feels “blessed” at a low time in her life. Madeline Abramson: The former First Lady…

****Review of “Maple and Vine”

What a grand opportunity – I got to see one of the great Humana Festival plays with a friend and then write about it. FUN! Thinking So by intermission I am asking myself and those around me – why is it I/we feel, in order to make a difference I need to make HUGE changes in my life, rather than incremental? Authentic The characters living the choices that 2011 offer – mixed marriage, good careers, take out dinners, movies on the laptop in bed – would seem to have it all. And they are unhappy. The last straw on the…

The Guest List…dun, dun, dun

Before I get too deep into this post, let me assure you, you are not invited to our wedding!  I don’t care if your uncle is related to Brigid’s mom, or you’ve been going to see hers shows since the Air Devil’s days.  We can’t invite you.  Please don’t ask. You may have guessed by now, but the Guest List seems to be the most stressful part of the wedding thus far.  Between having been born and raised here, and being pretty much famous, Brigid knows a few people in town who might expect to come to our wedding.  Add in my…

Big Ideas Becoming a Big Deal

A couple weeks ago I got to sit down with the Mayor and talk about big ideas for our city.  Rick Redding wrote about the Create Louisville: Your Big Idea competition, but let me assure you that 8664 was not the whole story.  I might be a little biased because my idea was also in the Top 5 of the competition (Check out the Creativity Fund), but the really cool part of this project was all the interest it generated. I think our city really is starting to recognize that people are crying out for good ideas.  We want people…

Shocker at WAVE – Langford Quits

That must have been some afternoon meeting. On Friday, WAVE-TV GM Steve Langford dropped a bombshell on the newsroom — he’s retiring, effective in a couple of weeks. He’s been there a while (GM since 1998, originally joined the station in 1978), and has been responsible for some innovative programming at WAVE, from being the first in the market to upgrade and carry news online to the most recent launch of a 12:30 talk show, Live at 725. He bounds up the station’s front steps in the show’s opening. Langford’s Hot Button editorials have occasionally gotten the station attention, as…

Scrapboarding- Scrapbooking on Steroids

Running some errands I discovered the newest exhibit at Mellwood Arts Center’s Pigment Gallery. It just opened Friday and will be up through April 31. Artist Carol Labashosky’s “Scrapboarding Beyond the Book” is kind of like scrapbooking on steroids. Carol describes in her artist statement “scrapboarding has no boundaries, but many layers.” If you are an avid scrapbooking fan you’ll enjoy and appreciate this exhibit. This artist doesn’t confine herself to the 10” x 10” paper boundary but has works that range from smaller 12” x 12” pieces to larger 3’ x 3’ pieces. Scrapboarding is a new term to…

Cocktails for a Good Cause at Proof on Sunday

I’ve been asked to do a lot of “celebrity appearances” lately, and this mostly makes me think that I’ve got a lot of people fooled. Most of these events involve me singing a song, or playing a tune, but lately it seems the service industry has been looking for volunteers. So despite the fact that my “celebrity waiter” work at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s big fundraiser a few weeks ago was, um, not the most fun I’ve ever had, I’ve somehow agreed to do it again for yet another cause. When I say it wasn’t fun, I mean that in…

Cardinals Stunned in Morgantown, 70-72

How do you know when Rick Pitino is livid? When he takes his jacket off, and he certainly had reason to be.  While the game was poorly officiated, Louisville’s loss to West Virginia wasn’t without fault from the Cards. The out of bounds call was very questionable, and Preston Knowles’ foul with .6 seconds left was excessive. Yet, when the Cardinals had a chance to decide the games themselves. Peyton Siva has to step up and make both foul shots in  end-game situations. Also, Knowles pulled up for the game winning shot so early. Louisville has had so much success…
