JCPS: 2 Inches + Panic = Snow Day

I was watching Fox41 this morning as the morning team did its best to make viewers think the two inches of snow we got overnight justified the panicked reaction JCPS officials announced at 5 — SNOW DAY! The station sent Lindsay Allen to Elizabethtown in hopes of finding some weather-induced crashes and back-ups, but she stood in front of a side street with barely a hint of the white stuff as cars whizzed by her on the main drag. Shots outside the studios showed wet streets. It was fun watching Lindsay measure the total – 2 inches – and she…

Gannett’s Design Centers Providing New Layoff Strategy

All kinds of giggles going on in the news – topped by the story of a drunk woman who rammed her car into a tattoo store. A responsible tattoo parlor operator refused to tat up 50-year-old Marie Reeves. Of course, she did what anyone refused tattoo service would do — got in her car and rammed the front of the store.  She was able to back her car up, head on down the road, where she plowed into a couple of gravestones at a cemetery.  Naturally, her next move was to catch a cab from the cemetery down to Hotel…

Rand Paul vs. Women

Gotta give it up for Rand Paul — especially if you hate women who have abortions. In an AP story, Paul called Roe v Wade “one of the most horrific judicial travesties in the history of our nation.” Paul’s on board supporting a “Life at Conception Act” making the rounds in Washington. All these new members of Congress seem to be competing to show the world that they are more against abortion than each other. No, Paul missed the memo on civil public discourse at U of L yesterday. The act purports to make it a law that “all unborn…

Pump n’ Pedal: Getting Two for the Price of One

By Barbara Day, M.S., R.D., C.N. I’ve been going to spinning classes for about 10 years. I have to admit, I am more of a lover of aerobic exercise rather than weight training. Yes, I do weight train but I need to force myself to do it. Yeah, yeah, I know I should know better as a health professional but…I am just telling you the truth. I just recently joined the YMCA after years of belonging to another fitness center. It was cheaper and 15 minutes closer to my home. I typically run and bike outdoors but in the winter…

Oscar Noms: Jenny and ‘The Dude’

It’s been a busy morning on my side of the Net. The Academy Awards dropped their nominations list and as I fervently scanned over it I couldn’t believe what I saw: Mark Ruffalo is nominated for an Oscar. I jest. Ruffalo is a good actor and you should check out him in movies such as “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “The Brothers Bloom.” This year’s “Oscar surprise” is that hometown actress Jennifer Lawrence is nominated for her work in the film “Winter’s Bone.” “Winter’s Bone” is based on the novel by Daniel Woodrell about a seventeen-year-old girl named…

AT&T.. are you kidding?

I just read the latest “AT&T Enhances Wireless Coverage in Downtown Louisville” Report. This must be a press release from AT&T’s PR division. So if this e-mail/blog post reaches at least one of them I’ll feel better: To all management at AT&T; you must be nuts. I used to be a supporter of AT&T. I ignored the reports of service problems in cities like San Francisco because I never had a major problem living here in Louisville. That changed 2 weeks ago. I’m told after almost daily calls to your company that at least 1 cell tower is having major…

Dog-Gone it, A Super Bowl Tie Would be Great

We got off to quite a start to the week yesterday here at LouisvilleKYcom.  First, a brief post on a typo made at WLKY got picked up by the national sports blog Deadspin, and then several other national sites, so we are officially on the map.  And I had to remove my first comment for being too profane, and stupid. And then there were first posts by some of my favorite writers — musician Brigid Kaelin and journalist Jackie Bentley. And the coolest neighborhood reporter, the original Bon Air Observer, told us about the sordid murderous Rai family that owns…

Things that make you go, hmmm?

I may be new to the area, but I have recently made a disturbing observation. Is it common place in Louisville to use running police cars for flasher barricades? For the last two weeks, I’ve noticed running police cars at the corners of Eastern Parkway and Preston Highway. The cars were positioned in such a way as to block the utility work taking place at the intersection.  Once I noticed this and other areas of town in which this form of barricade was being used, I started to think about all of the ways this situation is a waste. I can only imagine what type of…

Travelodge on Bardstown RD no longer a Travelodge

The Travelodge at 3315 Bardstown Road is no longer officially part of the Travelodge chain.   The national office of the Travelodge chain has confirmed this and is making effort to get its sign from the hotel. The 3315 Bardstown Rd location also no longer shows up in the database at www.travelodge.com. The automated answering system at this motel says that it is now the “Travel Inn.” A call to the hotel was answered on the second try and the base room rate is $45.99 per night for a room with a king-size bed. According to the Jefferson County Property Assessor…

What might the Merger 2.0 task force mean for the Bon Air Neighborhood?

On January 6, 2011, Mayor Fischer created by executive order the “Merger 2.0 task force.” This diverse, bipartisan group of individuals will study the various issues and will make comments. This measure appears to be more of an impact than outcome evaluation of merger. In line with my focus on the Bon Air Neighborhood, I wonder what could it mean for my neighborhood and for Louisville? In reality, I can only make a number of educated guesses, but then I have other thoughts that the other blogs don’t. For me, evaluating how merger has done in Louisville means reviewing what…
