No Excuses for Bonehead Committee Picks

Here’s Billy Reed’s logical suggestions for fixing the NCAA Basketball Tournament. It makes a lot of sense. So, of course, none of this will happen. By Billy Reed Ordinarily I’m not a critic of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament committee. I don’t always agree with their selections and seedings, but I can usually see their logic. This year, though, the committee did such a lousy job that it deserves the beating it has been taking in the media. There was no justification whatsoever for Florida getting a No. 2 seed and Kentucky a No. 4; for the Big…

Everyman, uhm, Everygirl and Her Daughter Went to the Orchestra

One of the best things for me about being the singe parent of teenagers is that if I want to do something at the last minute, I usually have a co-conspirator. Last Friday night after my daughter Laney’s ballet class, we scooted over to the Ogle Center and watched the Louisville Orchestra’s Seville performance, a collection of opera overtures, arias and other music the artistic staff connected through Seville. I kinda made Laney go with me; she coiled at first.  I knew she might.  Afterall, she’s in ballet class 20+hours a week and listening to more live music might just…

His name is ‘Paul,’ and this is between…

It’s probin’ time! Starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Jason Bateman, Bill Hader, Joe Lo Truglio, and the voice of Seth Rogen. Directed by Greg Mottola My inner sci-fi geek is happy. There’s something to be said about “fanboy” culture and if you’ve been keeping up with my movie reviews, or just know me, then you also know that I’m not huge on the past decade’s explosion of “fanboys/fangirls.” Yes, I grew up watching the “Buck Rogers” TV show, “Star Trek” Sunday mornings, “Quantum Leap,” “The X-Files,” “Babylon 5,” “The Greatest American Hero,” “Automan,” “Otherworld,” “Hard Time on Planet Earth,”…

Trail Running: Save Your Legs & Get a Runner’s High

By Barbara Day, M.S., R.D., C.N.   After the Derby miniMarathon & Marathon in April, why not try a different type of running: trail running. When running on trails you can get three for the price of one: great aerobic exercise, lots of peace and quiet plus you can be entertained by some beautiful scenery. While the packed soil running surface is  much softer than the road,  there are also a number of concerns facing the trail runner: uneven surfaces, getting lost and staying well hydrated. Keeping an eye on the trail by stepping over roots and around holes will…

Gone is Gaga. Ready for Rizo.

Hipsters who DID NOT bother to join the Top 40 crowd (wearing only their tighty-whities and face paint) will be glad to know that that Gaga is ga gone, and another ” Lady”  lands her act in Louisville this week.  Lady Rizo is the alter ego for singer and performance artist Amelia Zirin-Brown, who won a Grammy in 2010 for her work with Yo Yo Ma, and is featured on Moby’s most recent recordings.   Friday night I had a seat in the packed house at Joe’s Pub in New York City for Lady Rizo’s mix of sexy song and schtick (complete with a…

It’s March Badness Time

Welcome to Spring in the City. It’s about time. I know your NCAA brackets are busted, but please, don’t bother telling me how you had Richmond and Marquette in the Final Four.  I’m only interested in watching Jimmer at BYU against Florida Thursday night. Cats fans have to stay up late Friday to watch Ohio State send them home from New York. Tip is at 9:45. Cards Advance: Shoni Schimmel’s team won an NCAA Tournament game in Cincinnati, whipping Vandy 81-62. The Lady Cards get 2-seed Xavier Tuesday night. It’s on ESPN2. Pitino’s New Job: I loved the way local…

The End of the World as We Know It!

Maybe I have a darker sense of humor than I realized going in, but this morbid little collection of vignettes was disarmingly funny! I’m talking about WTF, LOL funny. I mean, what kind of imagination personifies the four horsemen – Death, War, Pestilence, and Famine – as roommates who fight in the kitchen over the last of the Kashi cereal?

Did CBS TV hire Rick Pitino?

So what did you think? Not bad! Watch any of CBS TV’s coverage of March Madness this weekend and you know what I’m about to write. Rick Pitino is not only a good coach he’s a really good analyst.  The Louisville head coach joined CBS Sports’ and Turner Sports’ coverage of the 2011 NCAA tournament. Officially he’s serving as a guest analyst Saturday and Sunday according to USA Today . But anyone who watched knows he really held his own alongside superstars Charles Barkley, Greg Anthony, Kenny Smith, Greg Gumbel and Ernie Johnson. The talk has begun… are Rick’s days…
