Louisville Kentucky home sales numbers update

New Louisville Kentucky home sales numbers for March 2011 show some promising signs. The number of homes sold last month was down 10% from March 2011. Ok, you may be saying “down 10%… that’s promising”? Heck yes… remember March 2010 saw large numbers of first time and move up home buyers in the market skewing home sales up for the first 6 months of 2010. The number of homes going under contract was also positive for home sellers. Even with snow, cold temperatures and rain for a majority of March home buyers were still out looking at homes and asking…

NBA is a Done Deal for Pizza Guys

Ready for the Louisville Pizza? J. Bruce Miller announced last night that in secret talks with NBA commissioner David Stern, he’d reached an agreement to bring the New Orleans Hornets to Freedom Hall this fall. And Miller revealed that his huge investment group – the one he said could buy the whole league if it wanted to — was actually local rich guys John Schnatter and David Novak. “These are top-secret deals, and I had to provide a cover story for John and David until we got it done,” Miller said. “So I made up the story about the foreign…

Chocolate Bunnies Feelin’ the Pinch? Easter Price Gouging a Threat!

Greetings, Pagans! For those of us who have worshiped at daybreak on the front porch of our homes by digging into an Easter basket and passing out with a sticky, brown grins by sunset– this economic news might just send you off to pray. Hershey said this week it’s going to raise prices by 9.7%, a move that many people expect competitors to follow. The entire industry is facing huge price increases for raw ingredients — the cost of sugar has more than doubled in the past year — and can no longer absorb the higher expenses. — So says…

Random Notes Home and Away

Normally I write about politics, but since I’ve been out of touch a bit for the past week, I thought I’d paste a few things together about my time away. Most of it was spent in Baltimore, and Virginia. The Baltimore portion was business while the rest was friends and family time. The business side was extremely informative. I learned a lot about my job and the field in which I’m now employed. Fortunately, the conference was held in Baltimore, whinch means CRAB! Yes we all had a lot of crab for dinner each night. crab cakes, steamed crab, even soft…

Miller Says NBA Dream is Still Alive

Tonight J. Bruce Miller will tell a group organized by YPAL that the NBA dream is still alive for this year. The event starts at 6:00 at Patrick O’Shea’s downtown. In an interview this afternoon, Miller said he’s working on a number of fronts and that he’s optimistic an NBA team could be the home team at Freedom Hall this fall. Miller said he’s trying to convince the group of  five investors, who he says have committed to Louisville, to come forward and make their identity public in order to fuel energy about the team. The group has a “no-shopping…

Green’s Ethics Battle Just Beginning

The long and slow process of relieving Judy Green of her duties on the Metro Council kicks off today. She’s the focus of a meeting of the Louisville Metro Ethics Commission beginning at 11:30. The meeting may not take place, however. The original complaint, filed by political rival Ray Barker in January, has triggered an avalanche of other accusations against Green. She’s been dodging cameras, then agreeing to interviews, all the while claiming innocence in spite of irrefutable evidence that she’s done plenty wrong. Barker’s complaint focused on Green’s mismanagement of a bogus program to hire members of Green’s family…

Wedding Dress Hunting and My Green Conscious.

For years it’s been the norm that grooms rent their tuxedos, despite the fact that you can buy a brand new gorgeous tux for less than the price of rental. Buying a tux makes sense because it’s highly likely that you’ll have another opportunity to wear one, at least if you’re marrying a musician who loves to attend galas. So why is it that Rent-a-Bridal-Gown is still hasn’t really caught on? It’s certainly more expensive to buy a dress than to rent one, and you will never have a reason to wear a wedding dress again. Somehow grooms still rent…

Assault on Houston for Local TV

Welcome to Opening Day. No, I don’t mean for the Reds, though they take on the Brewers at a chilly Great American Ballpark this afternoon. And the Bats don’t open up at Slugger until next week. No, it’s opening day for the local TV station assault on Houston (imagine graphic: ASSAULT ON HOUSTON! 2011). So if you really don’t want to miss a moment of the UK coverage, let this be your guide. Or go back to calling in and complaining about UK fans to Tony Vanetti on the radio. WAVE-TV, which claimed last night to be the ONLY local…

YPAL: Entrepreneurship Seminar

In the corner conference room of Kentucky’s Life Science and Innovation Center Nucleus some of Louisville’s most brilliant minds gathered.  The Young Professionals Association of Louisville hosted the Entrepreneur Seminar, a gathering dedicated to helping young professionals understand the different avenues of entrepreneurship and how to translate ideas into real business venture opportunities. YPAL, along with the University of Louisville College of Business, brought together a group of people that generated such a feeling of electricity that I could imagine a light bulb fully illuminating without the need of socket if held in the middle of the room. The Panel…
