Festivals, video art, tax incentives among topics
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A March 13 film symposium at the University of Louisville will focus on “Film and Filmmaking in Kentucky II: Showing Work, Seeing Work and Building Audiences.”
The public event, organized by UofL’s Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships in the College of Arts and Sciences and by the Louisville Film Society, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the University Club on the Belknap Campus.
Speakers from throughout the country will discuss successful film festivals, creative entrepreneurship and tax incentives in filmmaking and the need for exposure for video artists.
Abina Manning, director of the Video Data Bank at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, will give the keynote talk, “The Target Keeps Moving – Contemporary Film and Video Distribution.” Video Data Bank’s collection includes work by more than 500 contemporary artists and 5,500 video art titles.
Representatives from Rooftop Films in New York City, True/False Film Festival in Columbia, Mo., and the IF and Flyover film festivals in Kentucky will share current practices in festivals that feature films.
Curators who have managed video and experimental art programming from 21c Museum Hotels, Louisville Visual Art Association and Speed Art Museum will talk about artists’ hurdles in gaining audiences for non-narrative film or video formats.
Afternoon speakers will focus on taxes and policies affecting film production in the state; panelists will include Gil Holland, The Group Entertainment LLC of Louisville; Lori Meadows, Kentucky Arts Council; and Brian Frye, University of Kentucky School of Law.
