How to Become Heart Smart for Your Heart.

Whether you are male or female, heart disease is by far the largest single killer. For every 1,000 people born in the same year, cardiovascular disease would claim 427 lives while all other causes combined would equal 573. In fact, heart disease actually kills more women than men, almost 422,000 per year, that’s about one per minute, more than the next four leading causes of death, including all forms of cancer, combined.

Heart disease rates in post-menopausal women are 2 to 3 times higher than pre-menopausal women at the same age. African-American and Mexican-American women face a greater threat from heart disease than women of other races. In fact, 38% of women who have heart attacks die within a year compared to 25% of men. The research suggests 65% of women who died suddenly from coronary heart disease had NO previous symptoms.

It’s time for consumers to learn how they can lower their risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes through managing their lifestyle.

Registered Dietitian, Barbara Day, M.S., R.D., C.N., has developed a 6-week Heart Smart for a Your  Heart Lifestyle Program which can be presented as a Lunch & Learn at your worksite or offered at a church, a school, a women’s club or the program can even be given on a one-to-one basis.
