Satellite Office @ Shawnee to offer tutoring, employment assistance and homeless support
Story from JCPS website…
Louisville, KY., – On January 22, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) Superintendent Marty Pollio cut the ribbon today on a new satellite office created to strengthen support for JCPS students and families by taking district resources directly to where they live.
The office, located inside the west wing of the Academy @ Shawnee at 4018 W. Market Street, is the second satellite office to open under Dr. Pollio’s leadership.
“Breaking down barriers and building up new ways to engage families and provide them with better access to our services and resources right in their neighborhoods are part of our responsibility as a school district and commitment to our community,” Superintendent Pollio said. “By making these kinds of investments and strengthening partnerships with valued community organizations that help take our services outside the walls of central office, we can better ensure the success of our students and their families.”
The office, which officially opened today, is open daily Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. In addition to assisting with issues involving student assignment, student behavior supports and other services available to JCPS families, the district will offer several additional services at the office, including after-school tutoring, student employment assistance, and homeless support, through a variety of partnerships.
- The Beech—JCPS is partnering with The Beech to offer after-school tutoring to students at the Satellite Office @ Shawnee. The Beech was founded to assist children living in the Russell neighborhood and other economically disenfranchised neighborhoods in Louisville with successful transitions to work and postsecondary education. Through educational and other related services, The Beech works with parents to empower them with the skills they need to support their child’s learning and development. The Beech will relocate all programs and activities to the Satellite Office @ Shawnee and offer services from that location.
- Project One—JCPS is partnering with Project One to offer resources and assistance to students regarding employment. Project One is a community-based, nonprofit educational organization serving disadvantaged youth and adults by facilitating successful transitions into postsecondary education and employment opportunities. With shared space at the new Satellite Office @ Shawnee, Project One can provide services and programs that strengthen its ongoing partnership with the community and JCPS.
- Northwest Neighborhood Place—JCPS is partnering with Northwest Neighborhood Place to offer homeless education and foster care services to families. Neighborhood Place works with communities to provide blended and accessible health, education, employment and human services that support children in their progress toward self-sufficiency.
In addition to the Satellite Office @ Shawnee, the JCPS West Louisville Satellite Office, located at 1600 W. St. Catherine Street, opened in 2018 and serves students and families on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The office provides services through a variety of departments during the day as well as chess, tutoring and STEM workshops for students after school.
