Give A Day By Giving A Book

Mayor Fischer’s “Give A Day” Week of April 15 – 22 is coming up. Have you scheduled some time to give to someone else as volunteer? It’s hard, or it can be hard to fit it in. Some people I know are natural “givers” and are much better at volunteering their time than I. Here is just one of the inventive ways I have come across to give.

Earlier this week, The Jefferson County Public Schools sent home a letter to past volunteers asking for support for the goal to send every elementary and middle school student home for the summer with a book to read in order to avoid the “summer slump”.  I think this is an excellent goal for the school district and one we all should get behind. JCPS is asking volunteers to purchase one of the JCPS-approved books  (complete list) and drop it off at the elementary or middle school of your choice. Or as they suggest, a more convenient method, order the book from Amazon. com and have it delivered to a school. For more information check out the JCPS web site. Make sure to call the JCPS Volunteer Talent Center at 485-3710 so your act of compassion may be counted.

Here are some examples of the books on the list:

Kindergarten: Go, Dog, Go! By P.D. Eastman

Grade One: Little Bear by Else Minarik

Grade Two: How I spent My Summer Vacation by Mark Teague

Grade Three: The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies

Grade Four: No Talking by Andrew Clements

Grade Five: A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle

Grade Six: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

Grade Seven: The Maze Runner by James Dashner

Grade Eight: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
