“The Dress” begins its tortuous grasp upon me.

“Wedding, wedding, wedding, wedding, wedding.” That’s pretty much the topic of conversation these days, whether we like it or not. What surprises me, however, is how very few people have asked me what I’m wearing, other than my gutter-minded friends who have repeatedly asked, “Are you wearing white? Lolz lol.” (Not funny.) I guess I sort of expected the dress to be a hot topic, considering that’s all that bridal magazines talk about. It’s been a good thing for me, however, because I am not at all obsessed with The Dress. At a bridal show last week, I was reminded…

Deep thoughts on the Royal Wedding… again.

Back in January, I declared I was going to try to get really into the Royal Wedding. I’ve not been very good about this, mostly because I don’t read magazines or gossip blogs. Thus, when a special about William and Kate appeared on TV earlier this week, I forced myself to watch it. You may be laughing, but it really took a lot of effort to maintain my interest. You see, I used to produce cable documentaries for a living, so I have a lot of trouble sitting through them now. My thoughts aren’t of the Royal drama, but of…

Bring it on Prince William

Embarrassing Groom confession number 3 – last night I watched a show about the Royal Wedding.  Brigid has been threatening to get “really into” the Royal Wedding for a while now, and last night we took the plunge together (rather appropriate maybe?). It was interesting.  I’ve always felt a kinship with the future King.  We’re both named William and we’re about the same age.  It sort of seemed like we grew up together.  While he was at the fancy boarding school where he had to wear a tuxedo everyday, I went through my “alternative” phase wearing argyle socks with shorts. …

The Registry…aka Laser Tag for Grown-ups

Most married men will tell you that one of the best parts of the wedding planning process is the  wedding registry, at least most married men I know.  The number one reason that the wedding registry is supposed to be awesome is because they give you a gun.  I’m sure that most of you have seen or used one of things before – it’s a plastic hand-held laser.  How can it be anything but awesome? In addition to the laser tag device, they let you walk around the entire store and pick anything you want.  The theory is that since…

Planning a Big Party with Little Time.

According to TheKnot.com, we have “477 items to do and 112 items overdue.” I keep looking at that checklist, then closing it when I see the timeline. Apparently, I should have had colors picked out and a venue booked long before I got this diamond ring. What’s really frustrating is that TheKnot is not the only thing telling me how far behind I am. We’ve been to a couple of wedding shows recently, and the first question we are asked is, “When is your wedding?” When we answer “July,” they respond with great trepidation, “This July?!” After nodding the affirmative,…

Is it possible to have an environmentally-conscious event without breaking the bank?

The most common piece of advice I’ve read in wedding books and magazines is to make a list of priorities, so we know what’s important to each other in a wedding. Being the social creatures that we are, we know we want to be surrounded by family and friends,  have an open bar, and a live band. (How could a local musician use a DJ for her wedding?)  As far as planning goes, however, a major factor for us is being as Green as possible. Sure, we could just buy carbon offsets from a site like this one, but I’d…

Confessions of a Groom-to-Be

I figure the best way to get to know you folks is to just start by revealing entirely too much about myself.  I love weddings. I always have.  I remember my oldest sister getting married like it was yesterday. I wore tails, bore the ring, and then ran around like crazy at the reception. So when it comes to my very own wedding, I’ve always known it was going to be awesome. The hardest part of course is finding the right bride-to-be…well, I got extremely lucky there. So now it’s all about the other details — location, food, band, bar,…

How to Announce an Engagement in 2011

David and I were pretty secretive about our engagement. Well, not exactly secretive, but we wanted to be able to share the news with our family and friends before someone unintentionally found out about it on Facebook. For special news like this, we wanted to see our friends’ smiles. The problem with not telling everyone at once is that you have to tell everyone one at a time. Seems simple, yes? Not so much. We got engaged on November 2 and enjoyed our secret for a few days. Then it seemed everyone got really busy. Holidays approached, friends left town,…

A Wedding Announcement (David and Brigid)

Brigid Kaelin is getting marrried! There, the word is officially out.  The groom is David Caldwell, known to Brigid’s fans as FWT (Friend with a Truck).  He’s from Texas and works in Tina Ward-Pugh’s 9th District Metro Council office. And from what I hear is quite a romantic, and writer.  Brigid, of course, is the beloved local musician and piano teacher who’s quirky enough to play an instrument you can get at Home Depot in public. Brigid’s been blogging for a while now on various topics like music and cookware and where to put stuff and whiskey.  But when she…
