Lost Dog in Anchorage

Spotted these signs going up this morning all over the Anchorage/Owl Creek area. Although this doggie may well still be lingering in that territory, even a small dog can walk several miles in a short time – so I urge folks in Middletown, Lyndon, Hurstbourne and Jeffersontown to keep their eyes peeled for this pup. The number listed on the poster is 931-5546. Get on it, my fellow pet detectives.

Life Is Good In The Green Triangle

The Green Triangle is “… a future that we believe is very achievable because the vast majority of people in Louisville’s Ninth District recognize the importance of sustaining our environment,” the district’s Councilwoman Tina Ward Pugh said. That was back in May, 2010. Now there’s a team in place to move ahead with the Green Triangle vision.

Oscar Noms: Jenny and ‘The Dude’

It’s been a busy morning on my side of the Net. The Academy Awards dropped their nominations list and as I fervently scanned over it I couldn’t believe what I saw: Mark Ruffalo is nominated for an Oscar. I jest. Ruffalo is a good actor and you should check out him in movies such as “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “The Brothers Bloom.” This year’s “Oscar surprise” is that hometown actress Jennifer Lawrence is nominated for her work in the film “Winter’s Bone.” “Winter’s Bone” is based on the novel by Daniel Woodrell about a seventeen-year-old girl named…

Kutcher and Portman’s ‘NSA’ Relationship

Disjointedly tasteless with moments of awesomeness. Starring Ashton Kutcher, Natalie Portman, Kevin Kline, Ludacris and Lake Bell. Directed by Ivan Reitman It’s theorized that in Hollywood there is a machine. It lives, breathes, and exists below the streets of Los Angeles much like the purported ones that record all of our phone conversations exists somewhere beneath the windswept plains of Nebraska. Studio Execs keep this machine secret, looking behind their backs as they take the Metro to a clandestine tunnel located directed under Century City to another rail line that transports them to the room where this machine is kept….

Start Your Engines, Louisville!

When I visit other cities I’m amazed at how some of them invest in their transit systems and other facilities to make getting around easier. Minneapolis is one that comes to mind. They have a solid bus and light rail system that will take you anywhere. You can even roll your bike onto the light rail cars.

Movies on Disc: ‘First Snow’

A taut little thriller. Starring Guy Pearce, J.K. Simmons, Piper Perabo, and William Fichtner. Directed by Mark Fergus. When New Mexican salesman Jimmy Starks (Pearce) breaks down in the middle of nowhere -and I can’t emphasize ‘nowhere’ enough- he dawdles around a quaint pit stop while his car is being repaired. After a beer and an attempt to sell a bartender on buying a Wurlitzer, he pokes around and finds Vacaro (Simmons), a man who makes his money telling fortunes. Giving him 15 bucks, Vacaro has a reading that scares himself. Starks is given his money back and sent on…

16 Bad Movies

Maybe you’ve seen Facebook notes where your friends have to seemingly instantaneously come up with five, ten, sixteen, or even twenty movies that they know, love, or remember. Let’s turn this on its head, shall we? How about sixteen movies that you dislike, or hate, or there’s no redeeming the time and/or money spent watching them. Here’s my list: “Untraceable” – Diane Lane and Collin Hanks couldn’t save this torture porn masquerading as a drama. “Running Scared” – A movie so bad that Entertainment Weekly said “Paul Walker deserves better. The only reason to watch this is to see everything…

Statewide Tobacco Ban

The anti-smoking forces are looming over Kentucky’s civil rights like the Death Star over Alderaan once again. The Courier-Journal is reporting that a bill proposing a statewide tobacco ban is now before the Kentucky legislature. I oppose any attempts to curtail tobacco usage, even though I don’t even smoke, myself (aside from an occasional fine cigar after a good meal or a puff of my pipe whilst striking a Sherlock Holmes-esque pose at my fireplace mantle), mainly because I tend to oppose any attempts to curtail people doing whatever they want to do within the law. I repeat, within the…

Gov Gov-Who’s gonna Be Gov?

Well, the hijinks in the Kentucky Governor’s race have officially begun, and not a moment too soon! After a down period following the November general elections, I’ll wager most political junkies in Kentucky are waiting with bated breath for the race that seems to be shaping up. At least one major national publication calls the race the one to watch in 2011. And that’s not just in Kentucky-they chose it over all other races in the country.  Now,being an off year, that’s not tough to understand since no other major national races will be contested, and it could very well…

Kentucky Senate Passes Another Abortion Bill

On Thursday, the Kentucky Senate approved yet another bill that will make it more difficult for women to obtain abortions. The bill now goes to the House. It expands Kentucky’s “informed consent” law to require an ultrasound 24 hours before an abortion may take place. Currently, information about the procedure has to be given to the patient twenty-hour hours beforehand. This is a popular tactic among pro-life activists, one among many. Others include the parental consent for women under the age of eighteen  and requiring women to get the approval of two doctors. The ultrasound is unnecessary for first-trimester abortions–the vast…
