Politics and Footballs, and Political Football

Yes, there was a “light dusting” of snow. And JCPS didn’t call off classes. Packers-Steelers: Count me among those disappointed in the outcome of yesterday’s games, as I was hoping for a Bears-Jets SB XLV. The big game is two weeks away in Dallas. No local angle, really,  unless you count ex-Cards Jason Spitz of Green Bay and William Gay for Pittsburgh. Both teams, though, have huge local fan bases. I’ll be surprised if any local reporters cover it. I’m looking forward to the commercials. Speaking of which, how about those NFL TV ratings, which all may be ending after…

List of Cancellations: Everything

We are apparently getting the promised snowstorm. As I write this at 2:30, it’s coming down hard outside the window here. JCPS let out high schools at Noon, elementary schools at 1:25, and Luke has already called to see about going sledding. U of L called off classes tonight, and I expect that whatever your event is tonight – fugeddabout it. Which is too bad for the Voice-Tribune people, who have a big party scheduled at the Kentucky Center, and it’s media darling Angie Fenton‘s 36th birthday and all.  She’s probably relieved. It’s canceled. And how’s this for irony. Bellarmine…

Weekend Edition Featuring the Rick

I get the feeling that Rick Pitino is not over his little spat with the media. You may remember that hastily-called press conference, when Pitino blasted the media for reporting on the whole Karen Sypher mess. I went to that one, and the media assembled there are still scratching their heads over Pitino’s speech, which was to tell everyone in the media that they shouldn’t cover Sypher’s antics because they were lies. He seemed to be motivated to speak out after a TV station interrupted programming to report a new Sypher development. But Pitino can’t control what the media chooses…

Today’s Least Surprising Lead Story

So Randall Cobb is leaving the University of Kentucky to play professional football. I’ve never criticized a college student for leaving school early to take a good job. And whether Cobb does well or not in the pros, he’s leaving behind a Kentucky football program not likely to improve on its dismal 6-7 record and lopsided bowl game loss this season. The only surprising aspect of the story is that Cobb, who is from Alcoa, Tenn., was emotional about leaving UK.  He set the SEC record this season with 2,396 all-purpose yards and accounted for 16 touchdowns four different ways….

Goooood Morning! Yesterday some members of the LouisvilleKy.com got together at Browning’s Restaurant downtown to talk about the launch of this site. We’ve got some big ideas, so stay tuned. About Last Night:  It was nice to see U of L get to play on real TV last night on ESPN2.  Don’t know about you, but I’m not getting ESPNU just to watch these games, and the watching experience online doesn’t cut it. Knocks on Kentucky Keep Coming

The Louisville Sports Commission announced that Stanford’s Owen Marecic, a two-way player for one of the nation’s top teams, won the first Paul Hornung Award honoring the nation’s most versatile college football player.  While I haven’t seen Stanford play, he certainly seems to deserve the honor. Folks around here, though, surely were wishing that Kentucky’s Randall Cobb would pick up the new trophy.  Cobb set a record during Saturday’s BVAA Compass Bowl for the most career all-purpose yards in Southeastern Conference history.  Cobb was the model the award seemed designed for — an all-purpose back who ran back kicks, started…
