Gannett’s Design Centers Providing New Layoff Strategy

All kinds of giggles going on in the news – topped by the story of a drunk woman who rammed her car into a tattoo store. A responsible tattoo parlor operator refused to tat up 50-year-old Marie Reeves. Of course, she did what anyone refused tattoo service would do — got in her car and rammed the front of the store.  She was able to back her car up, head on down the road, where she plowed into a couple of gravestones at a cemetery.  Naturally, her next move was to catch a cab from the cemetery down to Hotel…

Rand Paul vs. Women

Gotta give it up for Rand Paul — especially if you hate women who have abortions. In an AP story, Paul called Roe v Wade “one of the most horrific judicial travesties in the history of our nation.” Paul’s on board supporting a “Life at Conception Act” making the rounds in Washington. All these new members of Congress seem to be competing to show the world that they are more against abortion than each other. No, Paul missed the memo on civil public discourse at U of L yesterday. The act purports to make it a law that “all unborn…

Dog-Gone it, A Super Bowl Tie Would be Great

We got off to quite a start to the week yesterday here at LouisvilleKYcom.  First, a brief post on a typo made at WLKY got picked up by the national sports blog Deadspin, and then several other national sites, so we are officially on the map.  And I had to remove my first comment for being too profane, and stupid. And then there were first posts by some of my favorite writers — musician Brigid Kaelin and journalist Jackie Bentley. And the coolest neighborhood reporter, the original Bon Air Observer, told us about the sordid murderous Rai family that owns…

UPDATED: Pay for Play in O’Connell’s Office?

UPDATED JAN. 25: The meeting referred to below was attended only by attorneys, not staff. O’Connell also responded to the accusation that he was withholding raises from personnel: “Our employees are funded by Metro Government and by the state of Kentucky. Believing it inequitable to give only Metro-funded employees raises, I am working on a strategy to give raises to my staff regardless of funding source. Metro still has the allocation.” Here’s the original post: There’s some trouble stirring in the County Attorney’s office, thanks to some accusations made by our pal Ed Springston on his blog. Springston wrote the…

An introduction with a touch of irreverence.

My Philadelphia friend (Adam Brodsky, a hilarious Yankee singer-songwriter who has a Guinness World Record™ for touring 50 states in 50 days, and whose music will make you LOL, omg) shared this article with me, along with the clever comment “its nust a simple mistake, the two keys are right jext to oje ajother,” thus reminding me if people as far off as Philadelphia are stumbling across Rick Redding’s new and awesome website, that I am LONG overdue in posting an introductory blog.

Bad Day for the Jets, and WLKY

There’s always somebody watching with a camera, I guess. Wonder how many people noticed this little graphic mistake during Sunday’s Jets-Steelers game.  This screen capture posted by CNBC sports reporter Darren Rovell.

Politics and Footballs, and Political Football

Yes, there was a “light dusting” of snow. And JCPS didn’t call off classes. Packers-Steelers: Count me among those disappointed in the outcome of yesterday’s games, as I was hoping for a Bears-Jets SB XLV. The big game is two weeks away in Dallas. No local angle, really,  unless you count ex-Cards Jason Spitz of Green Bay and William Gay for Pittsburgh. Both teams, though, have huge local fan bases. I’ll be surprised if any local reporters cover it. I’m looking forward to the commercials. Speaking of which, how about those NFL TV ratings, which all may be ending after…

A Walk on the Wild (Ginger) Side

I can’t say that I’m really adventurous when it comes to cuisine, but when Claudia told me she loved sushi, I proposed that we make it a sushi night. She chose the Wild Ginger in the Highlands, open a few months now in the old Cafe Metro spot. Now I can count my sushi experiences with my fingers — I went once to that now-closed Raw place on 4th Street, on a work outing to Asahi in St. Matthews, and maybe another adventure I can’t really remember. It WAS Friday night, and we didn’t have a reservation when we walked…

Conway Is In

Looks like we’ll have Jack Conway to kick around for another election cycle. With the filing deadline looming next week, Conway announced today in Frankfort that he will run for re-election as Kentucky’s attorney general.  Last fall, he lost his race for the U.S. Senate to Rand Paul. According to a cn/2 story, Conway “has been trying to retire more than $770,000 in debt from last year’s U.S. Senate race, including more than $630,000 of his personal funds that he pumped into the campaign.” Earlier this week, the C-J’s Joe Gerth speculated that Conway might not run, citing the grueling…

Oops! WHAS-TV Texts: Fail

Oopsie: Since I’m signed up for text alerts from all the stations, my phone tends to go crazy during weather events. But this one from WHAS-TV was pretty unusual: We regret WHAS11 is suspending snow closing texts due to technical problems. We apologize for the inconvenience. Go to whas11.com for complete closings. I got it Thursday night. It’s not just an inconvenience, though, as the station had sold an ad sponsorship to Big O Tires for its snow closing alerts, as evidenced by the one I got Thursday at 10:30 a.m. announcing JCPS’ early school closings.  Obviously, it’s not a…
