Out of The Rut and Into Summer!

No Simple Solution to Louisville’s Fitness Failure? I Disagree.

I believe Louisville, Kentucky can rapidly become a more prosperous, active and healthy place to live, work and play. A few policy changes and buy-in from public and private leadership can transform our city and surrounding counties. It starts with rolling out the red carpet for pedestrians, cyclists and transit users, instead of throwing up roadblocks. Without spending a dime on infrastructure, we can get healthier and wealthier. In six months we can make a measurable difference. It takes action at the top, incentives, education, leadership, belief, positivity, connectedness, and the conviction that you can woo people away from the intoxication of gasoline fumes.

The latest American Fitness Index is out and Louisville is near the bottom again. As some people are quick to point out, there’s no single solution to our health problems. But I know of one simple solution that can bring us health and wealth. The Dutch discovered it more than half a century ago. See what a difference it can make in your everyday life. Oh, To Be A Kid Again!

I marked the time at 4:00pm Wednesday of Spring Break week. I had just come home from work and my eleven year old met me at the back door. “I’m bored.” I begin rolling suggestions off my tongue that he could do with his two hours before dinner. Basketball – it’s nice outside. Practice soccer toe taps just like the Coach asked. Ride your bike. Take the dog for a walk. Finish the book you were reading. Did Gaga Warm the Arena for Elton? The Bitch is Back!

Just one more reason to file your taxes early. Good ol’ Reg Dwight, fondly known as British rock icon Elton John, will bring his greatest hits show to the KFC Yum! Center on April 15 which should put him smack in the middle of Derby hell, or heaven, depending on who you ask. Wow, we’ve never had two queens in the city within one month’s time! Looks like us ‘villebillies gonna be gettin’ us a pond.  It’s gonner be one of them there cement ponds … kinda. The Waterfront Development Corp. announced plans for City Pond, an ice rink planned for Waterfront Park that would be open from mid-November through mid-January starting in 2012. Planners say it will bring 60,000 people downtown during the winter. New Ideas for Easy-to-Make Breakfasts for Kids

Kids will do better in school and parents will do better at work if they eat breakfast. Here’s few easy recipes: Nutty Fruit Breakfast Wrap -1 whole wheat tortilla, ¼ cup low fat vanilla yogurt, ½ cup fresh or frozen fruit like blueberries, ¼ tablespoon of toasted wheat germ (high in folic acid and vitamin E) and 1 tablespoon chopped nuts like walnuts.
