Foreign Exchange Students Perfect for Staycations in the ‘ville …

Summer vacations don’t always have to be out of town.  There’s the staycation.  You know, where you sorta do the tourist in your own hometown, thing. For several years, we’ve added a staycation here in the ‘ville to our calendar.  In year’s past, we have made it interesting by hosting a foreign exchange student in our home.  We did it for just one month and we took our student from France – who is a friend to everybody in my house on facebook now so it must have been fun – to all things Louisville and we really enjoyed ourselves….

Down Memory Lane With Nancy Grace

Nancy Grace. Two words that provoke reactions whether you agree with her or not. Grace has made her career by proclaiming the guilt of various criminal defendants around the country. Notice I said guilt. The possibility of innocence never seems to enter her mind. I admit I took rather perverse pleasure in watching her near melt-down after the Casey Anthony verdict came down. As for my opinion, I think Anthony is certainly culpable in Caylee’s death, but I digress. Grace, along with other TV law “experts,” was raked across the coals eloquently by Cheney Mason — one of Casey Anthony’s…

Were Both Caylee and Justice Blindfolded and Abducted?

In the now-historic legal  battle, leaving a nation stunned and  bumbling from duct tape to dysfunction, we saw the unravelling of a tightly wrapped family go from the courtroom to the circus tent in a matter of seconds.  I have to leave all of this behind with the feeling that We the People  did not need the death of two daughters to level things out. Casey Anthony lives but has not won. While not as polarizing as the O.J. Simpson verdict, the Anthony trial has found its place in the books next to the former athlete.  The public outcry is…

Kudos to U of L Athletic Summer Camps

Both my kids are in U of L Athletic Summer Camps this week.  I am amazed at the professional way these camps are run. The coaches and athletes have a huge amount of responsibility with the campers while they are in their care but honestly the students athletes seem to have as much fun as the campers. The student athletes are increasing their fan base and teaching skills at the same time. Ken Lolla’s Louisville Soccer Academy camp bleeds red of course. Riding the wave of the fabulous Division 1 Soccer season, the first camp session was completely sold out….

Out of The Rut and Into Summer!

There’s nothing like the kids getting out of school to jolt you out of the day in and day out rut. School’s been out about a week and I’ve already been to places I haven’t been to in a long time. One of my favorite things about Summer is the Louisville Public Library’s Free Reading Program. http://www.lfpl.org/ Honestly, have you been to your nearest library branch lately? First off, it’s air conditioned! Second, the kids reading program offers a ton of fun rewards for the kidos after they read some books. I always tell my kids the best part of…

No Simple Solution to Louisville’s Fitness Failure? I Disagree.

I believe Louisville, Kentucky can rapidly become a more prosperous, active and healthy place to live, work and play. A few policy changes and buy-in from public and private leadership can transform our city and surrounding counties. It starts with rolling out the red carpet for pedestrians, cyclists and transit users, instead of throwing up roadblocks. Without spending a dime on infrastructure, we can get healthier and wealthier. In six months we can make a measurable difference. It takes action at the top, incentives, education, leadership, belief, positivity, connectedness, and the conviction that you can woo people away from the intoxication of gasoline fumes.

Ride a bike. Take TARC. Walk. Drive a car if you must. But don’t miss it!

The latest American Fitness Index is out and Louisville is near the bottom again. As some people are quick to point out, there’s no single solution to our health problems. But I know of one simple solution that can bring us health and wealth. The Dutch discovered it more than half a century ago. See what a difference it can make in your everyday life. Ride a bike, walk and use transit systems as often as you can. Here’s a good place to start. Grace. Peace. Bicycle grease. PS: Remember, every lane is a bike lane. Share the road. Pedalaround…

Stock Your Easter Basket at the Farmers Markets!

No matter how or why you celebrate this weekend in Spring, it is a time of reflection, renewal and yes…rain. A feast is always a vital ritual of the season as well as the giving of gifts. If you have a notion to create a basket of goodies for yourself, loved ones or company, you may want to visit Bardstown Road in the Highlands. It’s my neighborhood and I’m Kentucky Proud, if you will, about the variety available to our visitors. The venerable Bardstown Road Farmers Market  at Deer Park Presbyterian Church near Speed and the newest addition to the Metro…
