Put Your Red Dress on Friday and Celebrate Life.

By Barbara Day, M.S., R.D., C.N February is American Heart Month.  The American Heart Association (AHA) has designated Friday, February 4 as National Wear Red Day—part of Go Red For Women. In 2004, AHA along with First Lady, Laura Bush, launched Go Red For Women, a campaign to alert women to the fact that heart disease is their number-one health threat. Now, many more know that heart disease is not only a man’s disease; indeed, it actually kills more women than men, almost 422,000 per year, about one per minute, more than the next four leading causes of death, including…

What is Hummus?

By Barbara Day, M.S., R.D., C.N. One of the participants in my weight loss program called Waist Watcher’s Guide to Waist Management at my church ask if anyone has any suggestions on good tasting hummus. So, I decided to investigate some recipe ideas and here’s what I came up with. Hummus is a creamy paste typically made from a combination garbanzo beans (chickpeas), garlic, lemon juice and tahini. Tahini is sesame paste made from toasted sesame seeds.  Hummus is an excellent source of protein, dietary fiber and vitamins.  There are many variations of traditional hummus. Some recipes include different types…

Will Kentucky Lawmakers Let You Trust Your Nurse?

Did you realize that state lawmakers are digging in for a battle over whether you can get drugs from a licensed nurse practitioner? The controversy, detailed in Steve Shaw’s LEO cover story this week, sounds more like a bunch of physicians protecting their turf than anything involving the safety of patients and their access to quality health services. There’s a shortage of family practitioners, especially out in the state, where the void for basic needs could be filled by licensed nurses. But the law provides a catch — the nurses have to sign a collaborative agreement with a physician —…

$2.5 Million KIPDA Grant: Fighting Diabetes at the Community Level in Bullitt, Henry and Shelby

Most people would rather pop a pill to feel better, than look at the big picture of their overall healthy living options.  But, that is about to change for our nearby rural counties of Bullitt, Henry and Shelby based on a new grant from the Center for Disease Control that targets community involvement in the fight against diabetes in older adults, particularly minorities, a vulnerable population group nationally. All of us with TV sets, cell phones, and internet access hear messaging from various sources about getting “out there” and exercising, but the barriers to doing just that may be so…

Louisville Bike Move

It’s about 1.4 miles from from the home they rented on Camp Street to the one they just bought on Fetter Ave., but the miles aren’t the problem when moving locally. It’s all about renting or hiring a truck and crew, loading and unloading the truck, and sifting through the endless odds and ends. Beat me with a rubber hose first! I hate everything about moving. Don’t ask me to help – unless you’re doing it by bicycle. When Andy Dyson and Moira O’Keefe moved to Louisville from Philadelphia last year they rented and easily filled a 26-ft. truck. They…

Pet & People Festival

Today was the first of a two day unique event providing information, services and products for pets and people. Even the snacks were designed for pets and people to share. There was a great training demonstration using a “clicker”. The trainer was focused on reinforcing the behavior she wanted while ignoring the rest. This method eliminates the yelling and tugging. The dog was doing amazing activities like playing on and with a skateboard in a short amount of time. A pet massage was also demonstrated and experienced by pets and owners alike while those of us looking on wished we…

Pump n’ Pedal: Getting Two for the Price of One

By Barbara Day, M.S., R.D., C.N. I’ve been going to spinning classes for about 10 years. I have to admit, I am more of a lover of aerobic exercise rather than weight training. Yes, I do weight train but I need to force myself to do it. Yeah, yeah, I know I should know better as a health professional but…I am just telling you the truth. I just recently joined the YMCA after years of belonging to another fitness center. It was cheaper and 15 minutes closer to my home. I typically run and bike outdoors but in the winter…

Jumpin’ Jack

My first memories of Jack LaLanne were from my parent’s small living room and black & white Phillips television set. I sat on the braided rug watching this man dressed in a tight-fitting jumpsuit, bulging with muscles and kicking way up in the air with his….soft slippers. He did so with the help of a big furry white dog named Happy and a rolling soundtrack of a Hammond organ. Jack LaLanne did not look like my dad, who was the model of all men, of course, and I’d stack my father’s manly pair of brown wingtips shoes against this smiling,…
