More Motherlodge plus an Op-Ed/Whine on Shows Starting on Time

I’m playing on Thursday night at the Monkey Wrench as part of the Motherlodge Festivities. If you ask me what Thursday’s show will be like, I will tell you that I don’t know. I will also tell you that my control issues are flipping out because I don’t know. Actually, I’m not sure if it’s about control because I don’t really care what the vibe or order of the show is. I only want to be forewarned. Is that the same thing? Control versus knowledge? Really, if we’re talking about control issues, let’s talk about my favorite “cause” in the…

Gone is Gaga. Ready for Rizo.

Hipsters who DID NOT bother to join the Top 40 crowd (wearing only their tighty-whities and face paint) will be glad to know that that Gaga is ga gone, and another ” Lady”  lands her act in Louisville this week.  Lady Rizo is the alter ego for singer and performance artist Amelia Zirin-Brown, who won a Grammy in 2010 for her work with Yo Yo Ma, and is featured on Moby’s most recent recordings.   Friday night I had a seat in the packed house at Joe’s Pub in New York City for Lady Rizo’s mix of sexy song and schtick (complete with a…

Kentucky Crafted This Weekend. It Must Be Spring!

Good news for “Buy Handmade” junkies like me. The first big arts and craft show of the year, Kentucky Crafted: The Market, opens to the public on Saturday & Sunday at the Kentucky Exposition Center, South Wing B. This indoor show, featuring 200 Kentucky Artisans was ranked the #1 Art Show in the country by American Style Magazine readers. The Kentucky Arts Council does an excellent job in producing this event. Not only will you see fabulous art from Kentucky artisans but you will have the opportunity to learn about Kentucky’s traditional arts of fiddling, banjo playing and basket making….

Bacon, Bourbon and Beer

Coming from the world of fundraising, not many events catch my eye. I’ve been on the rubber chicken circuit enough to know that many of these events: 1) are not necessarily big fundraisers despite the amount of money put into them (we’re talking net dollars, folks) 2) are not all much fun and 3) are the same people go to the same events and pose for the same society pictures. Often, if you really want to help a charity, just write a check without expecting to be wined and dined. That being said, events are a great way to learn…

Surprise: Flash Mob is Coming Real Soon

The thing about Flash Mobs is that you really don’t know when or where they’re going to happen. But I can tell you that one will happen in Louisville today. I just can’t tell you when or where, because if I did, someone would kill me. Just kidding. Sort of.  Emily Carroll, a media buyer at Leapfrog Interactive, says she came up with the idea of organizing a flash mob after watching an episode of the TV show Modern Family. Emily is just 25, but said it was “bucket list” thing for her to organize and execute one. Officially a…

Did Gaga Warm the Arena for Elton? The Bitch is Back!

Just one more reason to file your taxes early. Good ol’ Reg Dwight, fondly known as British rock icon Elton John, will bring his greatest hits show to the KFC Yum! Center on April 15 which should put him smack in the middle of Derby hell, or heaven, depending on who you ask. Wow, we’ve never had two queens in the city within one month’s time! I do have some hopes to attend this concert but my real prayer is that he will keep as much clothing on as possible. But you gotta hand it to the guy, he’s “Still…

Louisville musicians perform Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” Tonight

I’ve been up since 7:30 on this lovely Saturday morning trying to learn these new Fleetwood Mac tunes for the encore. Yes, we’re expecting an encore because the show is just THAT good. For those of you who don’t know, several of us are playing the “Rumours” album in its entirety tonight (Saturday, March 12) at the Rudyard Kipling. Two shows: 7:30 & 9:30. Call ahead for more info or visit www.therudyardkipling.com. Learning this album has been a lot more work for me than it should be, mostly because I just really never listened to Fleetwood Mac. Sure, I listened…

I can’t believe you’ve never been to….

Even though I’ve lived most of my life in the Bluegrass State, I humbly admit that I, in fact, have never been to Keeneland. Every year around this time, I mention this to friends who stare at me in crazed bewilderment. Oh, I’ve been to Oaks and Derby, the Churchill Fall meet, the infield, even the nicer parts of the Clubhouse. But not Keeneland. But this year, the BF is looking fill the Keeneland void in my Bluegrass State dance card. In researching when to go, I looked first to the great ambassador program at Maker’s Mark and their annual Redheads…
