Bad Day in J-town for 214 VMS Staffers

Imagine coming to work and learning that your New York-based parent company had decided to shut down, putting you and more than 200 co-workers out of work — immediately. That’s what happened Friday at Video Monitoring Services of America offices in Jeffersontown. The company notified managers Thursday night and levied the bad news the next day. Here’s what the company did: “…provides news media monitoring, advertising monitoring and analysis, and integrated media solutions. The company offers media monitoring services and Web-based media management solutions for news coverage in media, including television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet.” Al Mayo, sales…

Pigs, Donkeys, Elephants – All’s Fair in Pork and Politics

A good, salty time was had by all at the 48th Country Ham Breakfast held at the Kentucky State Fair on August 25.  The two-pronged agenda, to raise funds and cholesterol, is put together by Kentucky Farm Bureau and a slew of farmers, with the finale belonging to only one little pig. What is the criteria for those Commonwealth Farms, you may ask? The annual event has been feeding politicians and regular folks  since 1964, raising more than $5.6 million dollars for charity. This year, the 16-pounder was auctioned off for the second year in a row to Republic Bank. They took the little…

Stealing, Lying, Riding, Biking and Singing

Happy Friday! Yesterday was my Mom’s 85th birthday, so I went over and saw all the birthday cards she got in the mail yesterday. There’s a lot going on around here this weekend, and of course Sunday’s a really big day. No Sympathy for Judy: I’m so glad the Metro Council hasn’t been taken in by Judy Green’s latest antic. She’s produced a note from her doctor saying that undue stress would be unhealthy for her. No shit.  Here’s an idea for Green — Resign and save yourself, and the government,  the stress. The Council voted 17-0 to reject her…

Yarmuth to Run Again, Hoping Mitch and Rand Walk

On Wednesday evening, August 24, the reception hall  of 147 patient Metro DEMS waited an extra 20 minutes to hear the annual late summer delivery from 3rd District John Yarmuth–and oh, it was so worth it. Entering the Metro Democratic Club gathering  from  the 95 degree heat in rolled up sleeves and a grin – the classic Yarmuth portrait – he was running at his heavily-booked  Louisville pace yet took an hour and a half to deliver both praise and punch for both the Commonwealth and the status quo for Washington DC, then entered a round of Q&A from club…

Fox41 Will Remain with Fox, Etc.

I had a great opportunity to meet Indiana basketball legend Kent Benson last night. Benson, who told me he recently moved from Bloomington to a huge spread in Nasvhille, was here to promote a new business, 1VIZN, which has opened a training center off Blankenbaker Parkway in Louisville.  The company sells “super fruit” blends and a weight loss program. Here’s a testimonial to that product — I was told that local realtor and UK All-American Rick Robey has lost 30+ pounds on the stuff in the last two months. Those involved in the local launch include a UK – IU…

Turning Blue – Todd Reminds Activists “People need to get a life.”

Trying to contact Todd Blue for a comment or suggest an interview has been difficult but not without it’s enlightening and frustrating moments over the past seven months.  I’m trying to make sense from a volatile email I received a week ago from Cobalt Ventures CEO Todd Blue, so the following timeline leading to the outburst is hopefully therapeutic for this scribe. In late February, I was compiling Blue’s segment of the series “Two Cents on the Iron Quarter,” he was thorough and firm. Okay, a little kvetching but he was under duress. Understood. I became interested in following…

Earthquake Felt in Louisville

A 5.9 earthquake in Virginia confirmed as being felt in Washington, New York City and North Carolina was also felt in Louisville, KY. According to the AP, the U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was 3.7 miles deep. Shaking was felt at the White House and all over the East Coast, as far south as Chapel Hill, N.C. Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were evacuated. The quake was in Mineral, Va., in Louisa County. In my office – at around 1:45pm this afternoon – just 4 stories up in downtown Louisville the building swayed for what felt like over…

Big Local Issues: Penis Trial, Bigamy, Garage Sale

Penis Envy: Anybody else find it funny to see reporters and anchors’ discomfort in covering this “penis” story? Would anyone care about this trial in Shelbyville if the doctor had amputated Phillip Seaton’s hand? And I heard Mr. Seaton uttered this unforgettable string of words, taken completely out of context: “He said the good news was he cut off my penis.”  Really, the story has been getting way more attention than it deserves, but why not? It is about a penis. Me and Mr. Jones: OK, I should have called Matt Jones yesterday about his dispute with Bill Lamb. I…
