An Open Love Letter to My Beloved:

Hello Louisville, I have missed you !! How I love thee and thy food, thy people and thy memories I pass every day I am home: The corner of Story and Spring where some uninsured kid pinned me and me dog inside my cute little Honda CRX to the telephone pole on the Northwest corner; the Cathedral of the Assumption where my children were not baptized but where they received their other sacraments; Nancy’s Bagel Grounds where we’ve spent nearly every Sunday after Mass; my beloved Limestone Bay Yacht Club where I’ve spent many afternoons and evenings and even some mornings…

Big win across the pond for Kentucky boy, Russ Cochran.

Yesterday, I tried to get a lot of the things done around my house that one never does unless company’s coming or one finally just screams that the toilet paper roll keeps falling off.  I’ve even lowered myself to leaving it semi-fixed and blaming the occasional guest in the powder room for its breakage and shaming them into fixing it, but the jig is up in my circle and alas, yesterday was the day for my honey do’s.  And, since I don’t currently have a honey, I’m my own honey. Sometimes, I reward myself with a glass of wine or…

Foreign Exchange Students Perfect for Staycations in the ‘ville …

Summer vacations don’t always have to be out of town.  There’s the staycation.  You know, where you sorta do the tourist in your own hometown, thing. For several years, we’ve added a staycation here in the ‘ville to our calendar.  In year’s past, we have made it interesting by hosting a foreign exchange student in our home.  We did it for just one month and we took our student from France – who is a friend to everybody in my house on facebook now so it must have been fun – to all things Louisville and we really enjoyed ourselves….

Meet Colleen Sholtes, Senior PGA Championship Standard Bearer

There are about a bloody, blue million volunteer jobs at Valhalla this week and weekend for the Senior PGA Championship.  And, you can tell a volunteer is legit because they’re wearing a green shirt.  All cool and waterproof and all. Standard Bearers, however, wear blue shirts. The volunteers drive around in golf carts, are hole marshals (these are the folks who hold up the signs and their arms when a golfer is putting that essentially shush’s everybody) and line people who keep the fairways clear of spectators when the golfers are passing.   Then, there are the folks who direct…

da Duff was in da ‘Ville For All da Duffers !!

Yesterday, Duff Goldman, of Ace of Cakes fame, was in the KitchenAid Fairway Club doing a demonstration at the Senior PGA Championship at Valhalla.  He fixed a little crack with Finlandia Vodka in a cake that was made in the likeness the Alfred S. Bourne Championship Trophy.  Evidently a crack presented itself after the trip to Louisville from Baltimore’s Charm City Cakes. Duff’s a lot of fun; he’s witty and he seems to kinda like the ‘ville after playing the Lebowski Fest a fear years back with his band.  He made a cake for Lebowski Fest, too, and it was…

Golf is a Gentleman’s Game … So Boys and Girls You MUST Turn Your Phones To Silent/Vibrate.

So, evidently, when a cell phone rings during a PGA tournament and a player is concentrating on a shot, it’s kinda distracting.  And, since there’s so much money involved and all, it’s a big friggin’ deal.  Enough golfers have stepped away from a tee shot or a putt or their pitching wedge after a spectator’s drummer, bicycle horn or Billy Ray Cyrus’ Achy Breaky Heart ring tone has killed the moment. To that end, this February, the PGA – after test driving a new policy at five different tournaments —  made the cell phone edicts official.  Here’s the company line…

My Big Fat Louisville Night

It was kind of a big fat Louisville night last night for this old girl. The Louisville Orchestra’s WOW event, in which the orchestra played behind a road show group of vocalists/guitarists led by Brody Dolynuik who sang the music of Queen tickled my giggle gadget. And I wasn’t the only one! After the opening song, there wasn’t a foot that wasn’t tapping or a fat bottom on a girl or a guy that wasn’t jiggling.  And, after the first set, not a face without a smile!  The excitement paralleled that top of the hill roller coaster feeling just before…

Everyman, uhm, Everygirl and Her Daughter Went to the Orchestra

One of the best things for me about being the singe parent of teenagers is that if I want to do something at the last minute, I usually have a co-conspirator. Last Friday night after my daughter Laney’s ballet class, we scooted over to the Ogle Center and watched the Louisville Orchestra’s Seville performance, a collection of opera overtures, arias and other music the artistic staff connected through Seville. I kinda made Laney go with me; she coiled at first.  I knew she might.  Afterall, she’s in ballet class 20+hours a week and listening to more live music might just…

Elemeno Pea, PDQ!

The other night, I went to Actor’s and saw Elemeno Pea.  It’s on the slate of the Humana Festival of New American Plays and runs through April 3. The setting is a minimalist guesthouse on Martha’s Vineyard and as a frequenter to the Vineyard, I was delighted with Michael B. Raiford’s set design and how right everything felt right down to the Nantucket Reds and the Black Dog gift basket sent by the wealthy estates owners.  The backdrop of a beautiful sky off the back balcony made me rush home to double-check my pictures to confirm my memories. The set…

Fleur de ice, ya’ll!

Looks like us ‘villebillies gonna be gettin’ us a pond.  It’s gonner be one of them there cement ponds … kinda. The Waterfront Development Corp. announced plans for City Pond, an ice rink planned for Waterfront Park that would be open from mid-November through mid-January starting in 2012. Planners say it will bring 60,000 people downtown during the winter. I don’t guess I remember if Jethro or Ellie Mae ever went ice skating in Beverly Hills, but this Marshall County girl’s mighty glad that she’s maybe going to get to enjoy some outdoor skating next winter without having to buy…
