I’m really not a sunglasses guy. Certainly not an expensive sunglasses guy. But when I was contacted by Oakley to test out their new shades at their store in the Mall on Shelbyville Road, I was all eyes.
My new Oakley RadarLock glasses with the Team Red Frame do make me look kinda cool. Jeremy, my Oakley sales rep and a guy who knows his shades, told me the G30 iridium polarized lenses I picked are great for golf because the rose base with iridium coating improves contrast and depth perception on the course. I got two sets of lenses, one for sports and one for driving.
Jeremy showed me the in-store custom eyewear touch screen to help make my choices. This is a long way from the $10 sunglasses I usually get from Walgreen’s. They’ve got something called Switchlock™ Technology, which “makes lens changing fast and hassle-free, enabling you to adapt to Mother Nature’s every whim.” according to Oakley’s corporate marketing office. I learned that “Iridium lens coatings also reduce glare and help athletes get the best vision in bright sun.”
Here are some more features:
• Durability and all-day comfort of lightweight, stress-resistant O Matter frame material
• UNOBTAINIUM earsocks that increase grip when you sweat
• Comfort and performance of the Three-Point Fit that holds the lens in precise optical alignment
• Multiple interchangeable UNOBTAINIUM nose pad options for a secure, customizable fit that maximizes comfort
Now, I’ve been wearing them for driving, all the way on my trip to New Orleans, even though it wasn’t that sunny much of the way. Other than making me feel hip, they really helped me to see better. While I was in the store, Jeremy showed me how much abuse they can take, twisting the frame into a corkscrew and seeing it come out like new.
The lenses are so strong they can withstand a bullet, though I wasn’t willing to test that feature. These retail for $420 and look even better wrapped under a Christmas tree.
