Louisville Ky’s chamber picks Austin to study its growth

GLI Selects Austin, Texas for GLIDE 2016

(Louisville, KY) – Greater Louisville Inc., the Metro Chamber of Commerce, will be heading to Austin, TX for its GLIDE 2016 trip on September 11-13th. The trip will be a check-up on what Austin has done in the realms of public policy, higher education, entrepreneurship, and talent attraction to rapidly increase their city’s size and regional economy.
“It’s been 16 years since GLI visited Austin and in that time their population has grown by 57 percent,” GLI President & CEO Kent Oyler said. “That doesn’t just happen by accident. We will be using this trip as an opportunity to see what they’ve done to foster this growth, how they are dealing with the pains that come with a population boom, and the best practices that we can bring back to Greater Louisville.”
Since 2000, Austin’s population has ballooned from 1.2 million to over 2 million in 2016, according to the Nielsen Company. The city, known for its vibrant live music scene, riverfront and burgeoning entrepreneurship, is a growing destination for millennials, and is solving the talent attraction issues for mid-sized cities in the U.S. Austin was named the fastest growing city in the U.S. from 2010-2014, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Austin’s influx of people with advanced degrees (41.5% of the population hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to Louisville’s 26%) is driving business attraction, investment, entrepreneurship, and innovation.  The last time GLI visited Austin in 2000, the average annual pay was $41,012.  That average increased to $65,857 in 2015. The city is rapidly growing businesses in the sectors of Advanced Manufacturing, Clean Energy & Power Technology, Data Management, Life Sciences, and Creative & Digital Media Technology.
Innovate Austin, an economic development initiative through the Austin Chamber of Commerce, is also focused on making the Austin region #1 place to start and grow technology and innovation based startups. GLI’s goal is to learn how these programs and others are sustaining growth in both entrepreneurship and traditional business attraction.
GLIDE stands for Greater Louisville Idea Development Expedition.  The three-day trip is designed to give Greater Louisville’s community representatives, elected officials, entrepreneurs, education delegates, and business leaders the opportunity to see how selected cities have overcome obstacles and achieved success.  This is the 31st year for the GLIDE trip, which is considered the most valuable opportunity to build collaboration to make positive changes in our region.
Austin was selected by last year’s GLIDE Portland participants as the most-desired destination for the annual trip. Previous GLIDE destinations include Charlotte, Denver, Houston, and Oklahoma City. GLI welcomes business and civic leader participation in this three day study mission. Registration is now open for business and community leaders as well as those interested in advancing Greater Louisville’s economy.  More information can be found here.
